A wise man once said "We are all at the mercy of our wild monkey minds. Incessantly swinging from branch to branch." With multiple windows and applications all vying for our attention, we have sadly adapted our working habits to that of the computer and not the other way around.
OmmWriter is a humble attempt to recapture what technology has snatched away from us today: our capacity to concentrate.
Voted as best new application by cultofmac users in 2009, OmmWriter is a tool that makes writing a pleasure again, allowing users to be alone with their thoughts; to concentrate and to write without distractions. More than a word processor, OmmWriter is a place to get inspired.
The secret to OmmWriter lies in its simplicity and apparent lack of functionality. OmmWriter Dāna pays special attention to audio and visual effects that contribute to the overall writing experience. We have spent a considerable amount of research time and effort in the audio-visual experience to promote and enhance creativity. Dāna II is the fruit of this investigation with new dynamic backgrounds employing chromatherapy techniques as well as new sound effects.
If you are a scriptwriter, blogger, journalist, copywriter, poet or just someone who enjoys writing, welcome back to concentrating.
What others are saying:
“You either love it or you hate it. Some Cult readers loved it so much they voted it as one of the best new applications of last year.” –John Turnbull for Cult of Mac
“Part word processor, part work of art, OmmWriter is a must for people who journal, blog, or do any kind of writing where creativity and idea-generation is key. Give it a try.” -Michael Grothaus for TUAW
“The modern computer experience is amazing for distracting you from work… Omm Writer Dana doesn’t lock you in a dark room until you force the words out, but rather creates a space in your head that allows you to focus on what you want to say.” -Bill Stitleler for Appletell
What's New in Version 1.3
***For a happy update experience, please read below. :)***
This version has one major change: All the audio is completely new. The reason why is that we no longer have the legal rights to use the old music in OmmWriter.
This updated version contains 4 new music tracks, 3 new ambient sounds, and 7 new keystroke sounds. The total number of audio options is the same as before. All other major features are also the same as before.
If you make this update, you'll be unable to use the audio that you have in your current app store version of OmmWriter. If you do make this update, you'll discover a less piano-based audio with softer strokes and richer textures.
If you want to hold on to the old tracks while finishing a project, then you can always keep the current version. If you're ready for a change, come join us on our new audio journey.
Happy listening and writing to everyone!
Complete list of updates and fixes:
- Replaced original audio with a new full set of music and sounds.
- Keyboard adjustments for still visible and stable keyboard
A bit clunky
I love the look and, generally, the simplicity of the interface. With my folio keyboard, I can type quite a bit and not be distracted by menus or buttons.
The music annoys me, but I'm a musician, so I instinctively pay more attention. The fonts are nice, and it's nice to have options. What I love the most, actually, are the light clicky sounds it plays while I type.
Ommwriter has almost everything I need to write out a full novel or just jot down some notes. What it truly needs is a better interface for saving my work, including Dropbox/iCloud/GDrive/Whatever support. As it is, I have to remember which of the tiny icons is "save", and the others remain a mystery to me. I want a button that will just save my work to my chosen destination.
Almost as bad is the intrusive keyboard. I use a BT keyboard, which iOS generally understands - I am not seeing the soft-keyboard as I type this. OW makes me bring up the keyboard that I will never use just to get to the options dialog. Bad form!
About 3k words into my first text, I'm already fairly please with OW on iPad. Cloud saving, a better save interface and a smarter keyboard would make it really perfect for me.
Good for looking, not for writing
This is a writing app, which is, unfortunately, not really good for writing. It looks great, and has a delightful ambiance, but the spacing is all wrong, the font choices are garbage, and the whole thing seems woefully outdated.
At one time, this was a great app, but not anymore. I want to say that there is hope for this app, but it looks like development has stopped, and no new features or fixes have been introduced to make it a better experience.
Even worse than the writing experience is the fear that using this app will result in hours of lost work. There have been multiple times that I've come back to this app after a crash or after closing it and seen that all of my work is gone. Since there's no sync to online services and the saving is unreliable, using this app means writing with the constant fear of losing your work hovering just over your shoulder. It's horribly frustrating.
Stay away from this app if you want to get any real writing done. Use Writer or Byword instead, since their utility as writing apps far outshine this one. All you need is a good writing soundtrack, and you're on your way.
New annoying sounds! Yay!
I understand that things can change, and right to use the music effects can be lost, but why replace the originals with such awful, annoying soundtracks off a cheap New Age CD?
The original sound effects stayed in the background of my brain, wonderful amniotic textures, soft white noise. The sounds are jarring, poorly made replacements that come too far into the foreground to allow me to focus and write. It was fun while it lasted, but I'm deleting the app now, after this update.
When you allow us to install our own sounds, ( mine would be various forms of white noise) and dropbox support, I'll see about coming back. Probably by then the Scrivener iPad app will be released though.
