A truly medieval card game, that is free to download in the modern world!

Ortus Regni is a new and novel card game inspired by the late Anglo-Saxon period of English history. The Late Anglo-Saxon era in English history is a time of warring Earls. Minor kings all, they claim whatever lands they can. They establish fiefs, cultivate powerful vassals, and fight and engage in endless political struggles. All the while, the Vikings roam not just the sea, but the land.

It is truly a Dark Age. Or is it?

This is Ortus Regni, “the birth of the kingdom.”

The ancient world is dead. The world is reborn. Anyone can become a king through politics and diplomacy – or by the blade. And it is always, in the end, by the blade. Will it be you?

Ortus Regni is a unique closed-deck, deck-design strategy card game. Players take the role of great Earls vying to control what will become England. Ortus Regni was inspired not only by Anglo-Saxon history, but also by the art of illuminated medieval manuscripts.

Ratings and Reviews

All for naught

I initially loved this game and rated it 5 stars. After bugs surfaced, I changed it to 4. The bugs hung a few games, an awful occurrence when you're on Round 14 and nearing the end of a game.

And now, after repeated plays, I see how badly the Vikings mechanism functions. You always want to build your deck with Monks and Vassals to influence the Vikings so they will attack your opponent instead of them attacking you. They never really lose - they come back to attack every few turns. Unfortunately, their attacks are way too big a factor. And even if you have more influence than all the other players, a string of bad luck will put you on the receiving end of attacks.

It doesn't work. This functions needs a major adjustment.

Underrated, Unknown, yet Unparalled

Edit: As of this build, the game is marred by bugs and crashes. I do hope that it gets fixed.

While it does take a little getting used to, the learning curve is not that steep (it's easier to learn than Waterdeep, Agricola, Sentinels), the card combinations provide numerous strategies. The theme is excellent, the artwork of the cards are apt, and the music is alright.

However, players may find it difficult at first since the cards contain no text, but after several playthroughs, the players would probably get what each card does, much like chess.

The mechanics of the game is pretty fast-paced especially when the vikings come. The game has the right dash of RNG which can turn the tide of an ailing earldom right into becoming the ruler of the land.

I really hope people would discover this game.

Beautiful game with a great theme

Ortus Regni can be as brutal as the period from which it takes its theme. Treachery, assassination, risky tournaments, wars, invaders from the sea. What I like best about the game is the way these elements of its theme, depicted in gorgeous medieval art, manifest in the gameplay. There is a learning curve to understanding how the game and cards work, but fortunately the app includes all of this information and its easily accessible (arguably even more accessible than the physical version since you simply need to press on a card to see what it does).

I recommend doing the training a couple times, then playing a few practice games against the AI until it clicks. I wish I could zoom in on the cards at the table (especially my opponent’s cards—if there’s a way to do that I haven’t figured it out). That said, the game works well, costs nothing, and has entertained me for hours.
