Organized Support Companion in an Emergency Situation

Information. Resources. Peace of Mind.

If you or a loved one has a mental health crisis or struggles with substance abuse, do you know what to do, where to go and how to get help? Now you do. With the Organized Support Companion in an Emergency Situation App (oscER), you have resources right at your fingertips at the time when you need them most.

oscER is your guide to navigating psychiatric crisis situations in San Diego County, including:
-Clear content on what to do Before, During and After a psychiatric crisis
-Clear content on Substance Use Disorder, including an Overview section, plus information on insurance (e.g. Drug Medi-Cal) and intervention.
-Maps and phone numbers for walk-in centers, ERs and psychiatric hospitals
-Professional answers about diagnoses, legal issues, treatment
-Food, shelter and legal aid resources
-Education about mental health disorders, as well as professional trainings available (e.g. for Naloxone administration)
-Crisis line information
-LGBTQIA resources
-Glossaries of terms and acronyms that are context-senstive
-Spanish version

With oscER, you can get information on:
-Talking to emergency personnel
-Understanding diagnoses
-Arranging inpatient or housing placement afterwards
-Finding legal aid
-Understanding what their loved one is experiencing
-Managing stress during the crisis

When it comes to a psychiatric crisis, time is of the essence and knowledge is key. With oscER on your phone, tablet or computer, there is one less thing to be concerned about and one more reason to stay focused on the task at hand - getting help effectively and expediently.

You don't have to be in a crisis to benefit from oscER

It is good to educate the whole family beforehand on different types of mental illnesses, warning signs of suicide, common signs of relapse, what happens when you call 911, getting a correct diagnosis, and so much more...and it is all within a key tap or finger swipe.

Prevention and intervention tools are key to avoiding a mental health emergency, or to help deescalate a tense situation. You will find soothing music and soundscapes in the oscER app to aid you in attaining rest and relaxation whenever you need it. Choose from a continuous loop of these sounds:
-Rain Forest
-Flute Music
-Ocean Surf
-Song Birds

Let oscER be there for you during a time of need!

Some privacy please

Sometimes mental illness is a sensitive subject to talk or think about. The oscER app lets you peruse mental health information in the privacy of your own time and in your own way. With the resources it offers, you will feel less alone and more connected to the world of information and support available in San Diego.

NAMI San Diego makes it happen

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI San Diego) developed oscER as an app that helps family and friends navigate a psychiatric emergency for a loved one, with regional resources, guidance and information. Much-needed resource, needs polishing

This is an excellent and a required resource for mental health emergencies.

I would only recommend that

1. the map links in the Resources tab have an option to be opened with Google Maps.

2. Also, it would be great to have one map with all these addresses, the ER rooms in particular, which would make it easier to see which resource is closest.

3. I would also welcome a section of addressing a suicidal person on the spot, as calling 911 is not always an option. There are different situations involving not just loved ones, but neighbors, acquaintances, and roommates. If a person could be helped without involving authorities, every such effort should be made, such as staying with the person, removing alcohol and drugs, and bringing food and water/soft drinks.

4. It would be great to describe in more detail what each option entails. For example, does summoning 911 cost money? Some may refuse help because they’re afraid of getting hit with a large bill. What is the most discrete option?

Thank you!

I’m in a new relationship with a partner diagnosed with major depressive disorder, bipolar and schizoaffective disorder. While I do not live in the San Diego area, the wealth of information provided in this app has given me guidance to better understand my loved one’s diagnoses, how we can prepare for crisis situations, suggestions on how I can best communicate with and support him, and the importance of my own education and self-care. Thank you so much for providing this resource.

Solid Resource

A fantastic start. Keep the updates coming and thank you for the work you do. San Diego stands to benefit quite a bit from your efforts.
