Otter is a smart note-taking and collaboration app that empowers you to remember, search, and share your voice conversations (for English only).

An enormous amount of valuable information is communicated verbally every day through meetings, phone calls, video conferences, interviews, sales pitches, school lectures, etc. Until now, it has been extremely difficult to review or search this information quickly. With Otter, voice conversations are as easy to manage as text information.

What the media are saying about Otter:
“Arguably one of the most important breakthroughs announced at Mobile World Congress 2018.” – ZDNet
“Brings voice transcripts into the AI age.” – CNET
“Uses AI smarts for automatic speech recognition, speaker separation and identification as well as deep content search.” – Mashable
“Designed to be able to understand and capture long-form conversations that take place between multiple people.” – TechCrunch

How to use Otter:
1. Record your in-person conversations with the app, or import your existing recordings at website
2. Receive a machine-generated note in minutes.
3. See and hear who said what, skim and search for the info you need, polish the note – all in one place.
4. Jump straight to the parts of a conversation you’re looking for with keyword search.
5. Create groups to send meeting notes to your team, swap lecture recordings with friends, and save interviews, presentations, and other important content.

Appears to exist to generate Google accounts.

Very Google-centric. If you are a Google anti-fan, (or just value privacy) you will be annoyed by this app.

The app ignores all of your iPhone’s built in services like Contacts, Calendars and share sheets, and instead expects you to submit to the Google hegemony versions.

• Developer responded to the above, essentially asserting that it wasn’t true.

But it is true.

The app does have access to a share sheet, but as of last week, “sharing” a transcript just shared a link, not the actual transcript content.

And having now used the app to transcribe a lengthy meeting, I can say that the transcript was sufficiently error-riddled as to be pretty much useless.

One major flaw in the concept is that the app appears to make no effective effort to detect different speakers — instead, they all just run together. There is presumably some tactic to reduce this, but that misses the point of such tools — to uncomplicate the task.

Developer Response

(1) Otter lets you sign in with email or Google, and import contacts from both iOS and Google – giving users options and not intending to be Google-centric. (2) You may export the actual transcript content (not just a link) via a share sheet. (3) For best results, place Otter within three feet of all speaking parties, speak clearly, and minimize background noise and speech overlap. Would you please try again with these guidelines in mind and see if you get better results? Please share a sample of your error-riddled note to so we can troubleshoot further. (4) Otter can be trained to separate and identify speakers by tagging speech bubbles with the speaker’s names. Tap on the avatar to the left of a bubble to enter or select a name. Try to tag bubbles that have minimal background noise and don’t include speech from multiple people. Tag about 15 seconds of speech for each speaker. Users who followed these simple steps have reported very good results. (5) Please consider updating your rating based on these clarifications. Thanks!

Automated Notes Are Awesome

Overwhelmed Entrepreneur

ASR is accurate enough so I can focus on what’s being said in interviews and meetings said forget about taking written notes, that are often illegible. Keywords hint at what this could become with application of real natural language understanding to deliver succinct summaries.

Developer Response

Please help spread the word about Otter by sharing the app. Keep the feedback coming. Thank you for your 5-star rating!

Amazing transcription fidelity

Although in beta, the version I used was amazingly accurate in creating a nearly real-time transcript of both in person and over a speakerphone! Only ding is that the process of getting the transcript out of the app as text is clunky, but I imagine that will improve.

Developer Response

In the Otter app, you can Export the text to the clipboard and directly into other apps under the 3-dot menu. In the website, you can Copy Text to Clipboard under the 3-dot menu.

Please update to the latest version and give Otter another try. We hope to earn your 5-star rating.
