An app in decline
I've been using Overcast since day #1. It used to be a really good podcast player, but ever since the 3.x UI overhaul it's been a buggy mess, and it's not getting better -- worse in fact. It's much slower to launch, the UI has annoying lag on controls, it crashes, it doesn't get along with the iOS lock-screen audio control, and very lately it has started losing it's place when pausing playback (sometimes only going back in time a few minutes, other times as much as an hour. The other issues are merely irritations, but losing it's place in playback is a big deal in an audio player.
A new release will fix one set of bugs, but introduce a new set. Clearly, there's not enough testing happening before release. I hope this turns around, because I use Overcast daily... it's probably my #1 used app. If this get's any worse, I'll be going elsewhere for my podcast listening.
Need to tap twice to play then dismiss card
I really like Overcast and have been using it for over a year. The new design is very nice, but I don't like to have to tap twice every time I'd like to play a podcast. This is annoying when you're stuck in traffic and you'd like to quickly play something (which is where I mostly listen to podcasts).
A small improvement would be to just start playing when you tap on a podcast and you bring up the info card. In the rare case that I don't want to play, I can always tap stop and do whatever I wanted to do with the card (very unlikely case). I also think that the card should be minimized in this case, just like in Apple Music.
So much better than any other Podcast app
I've been very hesitant to move to Overcast after being burned by other players in the past. However, this is the best decision I've made.
Totally listening freedom. With so many listening speed options (including smart speed, which is fantastic), playlist building options (for example, when you binge a new podcast and want to catch up on your favorites, you can just build a smart playlist for that), and so many other optional "nit-picky" details (such as the skip forward and back lengths!) this is the podcast app for podcast listeners.
