Best one yet...

Out of all the podcast players I’ve tried (there have been a lot!), this one is the most user friendly. I am an avid podcast listener and am subscribed to at least 50. Overcast accommodates all of them, even if the memory on my phone doesn’t! There are only a few complaints about Overcast’s functionality: the title page of each podcast may have a description but the app doesn’t allow you to see the entire text. It does allow you to read the details of each episode, unlike some of the others I’ve tried. Another non-feature that drives me nuts is if you back out of the screen your podcast is playing, you can’t go back to that podcast; instead you have to scroll through them all again, e.g., if I am listening to Casefile and want to look at descriptions of other podcasts, I can’t just go back to the Casefile podcast episode list. I have to return to the top and scroll back down the list to find Casefile again. At least they are in alphabetical order, not the order I added the podcast. I have to admit, that’s the most annoying non-feature I’ve discovered so far. Other than that, the sound is great, you can build a playlist and the forward/backward buttons are adjustable. If Overcast could fix these two little gripes I have, it could take over the podcast world!! *deep, maniacal laugh*. Seriously, if you’re looking for a convenient podcast player, this is it. Happy listening.

The Best I Ever Had

Like many regular consumers of podcasts, the recent Apple Podcast app update was a severe disappointment that sent me off on a quest to find a new player. Since then I’ve tried several different apps, but I can now say that, without a doubt, Overcast is the best free podcast app I’ve ever come across. I should have been using it from the start. While it’s organizing of episodes and shows is slightly less intuitive than the original Apple Podcast design, this minor default is more than made up for by Overcast’s excellent sound control options. I listen to a lot of very interesting shows that have mediocre audio quality, something that always got on my nerves in the past, but with Voice Boost and Smart Speed I can now listen to these podcasts better than ever before. Couple this with a much more precise audio speed adjustment (I like to fiddle with speed constantly while I’m catching up on old episodes) and Overcast seems like it was designed with precisely my needs in mind.

So, yeah, if you are also in the wilderness following the self-sabotaging atrocity that was Apple’s iOS 11 Podcast app update, the search is over. Overcast is, and apparently always was, the best free podcast player available. Enjoy it.

Best Podcatcher on the Planet

Don’t dawdle, just put it on your phone and experience the blissful blissening. Be emblissened.

I have no criticisms. Let me take a moment to tell you how rare that is.

***It is quite rare for me to have no criticisms of an app***

There. The moment has passed. You have been informed and no doubt influenced.

Put the app on your device. Put it on, put it on. Do a little dance. Make a little love. Get down tonight.

Feature requests? That I haz. I’d like to have more granular control of file retention/deletion, on a podcast title basis. Right now I can either set the app to retain all podcast episodes locally (on device) after I’ve listened to them, or I can set the app to delete all episodes after I’ve listened. I want to have that control for each podcast title. So “Podcast 1” retains all played episodes, while “Podcast 2” deletes all played episodes. Because some titles, like narrative/storytelling ones, I might listen to more than once (evergreen). While others, like topical, newsy ones, I play through once and don’t need them around anymore (single-serving, time-sensitive).
