I love the idea of being able to borrow books from the library without having to go to the library. I work nights so getting to the library is a bit of a chore. The only thing I'm disappointed in is this works much like a library in terms of if someone has "checked out" the book (in my case audiobooks as I listen to them religiously while I work), you can't even read or listen. The audiobooks I search are always checked out, most that I want have over 30 people ahead of me and if I put it on hold...given the minimum 14 day lease on the books, that's over a year I'll be waiting to listen to the book! Being on-line, I can't see why you have to download the copy to stream it even with the overdrive listen capability, or why there isn't more books available. I was hoping I could save money by getting rid of my audible account for this one, but seeing as the books I want to listen to (even the reading format) are all checked out with major holds, I can't seem to justify it, even if it is free.
I have found a couple of audio's that I've checked out but only after a couple of hours of searching through page after page that I'm not terribly interested in reading either which is a shame, but on the user front, I can say the ease of gaining a book from Overdrive is quite simple, even returning it. I do plan on keeping the app on my phone as I can never get enough of books, but wish it would make more sense in the checkout department.
I love this app. But I think it needs an update
I love this app. I need to listen to books at work as I can not read a book while working. I have been using this app for a few years now and I don't know what I would do without it. With that being said, I recently updated my iPod , iphone5, and iPad to the iOS 9 and after doing so this app has been acting weird. I download a few books and when I click on a book to listen to I have to click play which I never had to do. It usually would play automatically as I have that setting. Then when I decide to switch books and click on a new book I have to press play but it plays the previous book while showing the cover of the new book you want to listen to. I would have to go to the right of the screen and drop down to table of contents and click on the chapter. Usually I wouldn't have to use the bookmark unless I am returning a book and then checking it out again because I didn't finish it. The bookmark keeps my place in that situation but when I switch books to listen to I never lose my place until now. Now, I have to start a book all over again. I think this app is not compatible with iOS 9 and you have to do another update. Otherwise that I love, love, love this app. It has saved me getting through 8 or more hours of work. It keeps me going.
I use OVerdrive on my IPhone and I love it!! My husband reads on his IPad and in helping him get started w downloading books, the interface is much more user- intuitive on the iPhone. I also wonder if the difficulties earlier reviewers reported aren't due to their devices, other types of phones or tablets. Re the need to re-download 500 books: your library is VeRy generous; I can only download 10 at a time. I do notice improvement/ differences book-to-book re the bookmark saving my place and wonder if it's related to fully backing out of the App. I do have two requests. I browse frequently, saving books on my Wish list. I would love to have a button "go to Top" "go to Bottom" of the browse page when I go back. It's not hard to scroll down again, just an annoyance. 2nd request: please put the "rating stars" with the return function. So far, it seems I only find it when I'm checking the book out. Ok a 3rd request: is there a way to download to one device, then access from my others? I would be overjoyed to be able to pick up my tablet to read from time to time. Currently, the books downloaded on my tablet must be read on my tablet, so when I need to travel those books get left behind. Keep up the good work!
