Description

■ Updated for macOS 12 and Apple M1!

Say hello to Owly, a cute little fellow who lives in your Mac’s menu bar and does its best to prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping. What this means is that Owly ensures your Mac’s screen never goes dim, no screen savers appear and that your Mac doesn’t enter sleep mode.

By right clicking the Owly icon on the menubar, the app can toggle on/off. When the icon is red, Owly is active and will keep your Mac wide awake. When the icon is black, the app is no longer actively ensuring your Mac doesn’t enter sleep.

Owly is useful for when you want to keep certain information showing on your screen whilst whilst you may not be using the keyboard/mouse actively.

Some examples are:

- Watching a video (non fullscreen mode) and you don’t want your Mac to sleep
- If you are using your screen to view live updating stats
- If you are downloading files and want to be able to monitor the status whilst you may be sat at a distance from your Mac

To access Owly’s Preferences, simply click on the menubar icon. Owly can be customized as follows:

- Set it to launch at login
- The app can be made to appear in the dock
- Adjust the duration for which you want Owly to be active
- Toggle on/off a countdown timer on your menubar for how long Owly will remain active
- Adjust the app to allow your Mac to sleep after a selected battery percentage threshold

We've spent a great deal of time thinking about the details and after using this app for a few days, you'll begin to notice our small yet creative touches. We plan on a very active development cycle, so please spread the word and keep sending us your feedback!

One of my must-have useful apps.

Like many others I’m also coparing this app to Caffeine! I think the app is wonderful and everything positive that can be said about it has been said. I have been wishing that I could activate it with just one click and only recently discovered that with a right-click I can do just that. Turn it on to the defauld duration selected in preferences. The one additional feature I would love is to have is an option for the wake time to start after the last detected activity on the computer (keyboard, mouse, etc). So that the timer effectively starts from the time you move away from the computer rather than from when you select the timer.

Yet another reason to love this app

I won't repeat the other reviewers here that all say this app is PERFECT, but I will add yet another reason to love it. If you connect a smart TV to your Mac through the HDMI port (to use as a monitor), you'll notice that most smart TV's will sleep after 10 or so minutes, with NO ABILITY to disable this sleep mode, either through the TV or Mac, because no keyboard/mouse inputs are being received by the smart TV. Owly solves this problem by (apparently) sending enough signal inputs to the TV to stay on. This is a huge blessing, because my smart TV would turn off after 10 minutes of no mouse/keyboard inputs. Owly has solved yet another sleep issue. Thank you and please keep this app alive!!!

One of my 100% apps — Excellent!

This is one of the few apps that I have running 100% of the time. I find it so convenient to be able to keep my screen on all the time when I am around it, but then click it to screen saver if I leave my office. I used to use the “hot corners” feature of the screen saver for this, but I would unintentionally turn on screen saver, so turned that feature off.

My Mac is my “planner” at work, so it’s helpful to have the screen visible all the time, even if I am not typing or clicking for a while.

I also like that I can have Owly in the bar at the top of the screen without having it take up a spot in the dock.
