Ratings and Reviews

Caveat Emptor

I have used this dictionary for years and loved it on my iPhone. I bought a new iPhone a few months ago and discovered that I could not open my OED app. So I bought this new version of the Oxford Dictionary of English. At $9.99 it should be worth it, and on my Mac it is a worthwhile purchase. The problem is that I wanted this OED for my iPhone so that I could continue to have constant access to a quality dictionary. Unfortunately, it only works on the Mac at home. Apparently the company has never gone to the trouble of developing their product for the new iPhones.

Stopped working

Edit: they fixed the sound issue, and there's a keybind (⌘)+P)to pronounce a word. Way to go, back to five stars!

After the update, the sound stopped working...

Also, it would have been nice (if/when the sound issue were resolved) to add the functionality of creating a custom keybind for the buttons in the menu (such as the button that makes it pronounce words).

Developer Response

Version 3.5 should fix sound issues in 3.4 (sorry), and better quality too now. You can use Command (⌘)+P to pronounce a word.

Oxford English Dictionary

Just loaded OS X Lion and discovered that my Merriam Webster dictionary was not compatible with this software, so I purchased the OED. It's a fine dictionary based on outstanding lexicography. But the app description should explicitly note that the audio pronunciations are those of British speakers, not American. Thus, schedule is pronounced "shedule" and lieutenant, "leftenant." Not a deal breaker, but something buyers should know up front.
