Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
Intuitive touch screen operation! Select Voices and Rhythms, Keyboard Touch Sensitivity and more with ease, Using the dedicated Yamaha P255 full controller.
Use an iOS device (iPhone/iPod touch/iPad) for even easier and more convenient control of the P-255. This is a dedicated app that makes the compact and stylish digital piano, P-255, even easier to use. The app supports a wide variety of playing situations on the P-255, from piano practice to live performance or performing at parties.
*An Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter/iPad Camera Connection Kit or dedicated Yamaha cable such as the i-MX1/i-UX1 is required to connect the iOS device to the P-255.
- Now even easier to see the Voices to select! Listen to the demo songs — try out new sounds
- Settings made simple
- Save your favorite sound settings in the app to take along anywhere
Works great, but Yamaha needs to add file sharing (PLEASE!!)
I’m pushing the use of the excellent p255 beyond it’s “pro-sumer” use, by using it in a pro-setting. The app is really the only way to unlock the piano’s features. Yamaha did a great job with the app, so much that I bought an iPad mini just to control the P255 (as well as synth apps). The problem is I was using an iphone to test the waters, and created a ton of custom presets. I then wanted to transfer those to the iPad, and back up my data as well.- no joy. I spoke to Yamaha’s wonderful customer support, (who were absolutely stellar and uber-helpful) but they apologetically admitted it can’t currently be done. This is a huge FAIL by the app developer: that users can’t back up, nor transfer their custom made data. I looked at some 3rd party apps that allow root access to the app’s folders. E.G: I-EXPLORER and they stated the following: "Only the developer of an iOS app can enable iTunes File Sharing, so we encourage you to contact the developer of any iOS apps that you want to be able to access and ask them to release an update to enable file sharing. It's extremely easy for them to do”
Yamaha (namely the app coders) should at least offer file sharing as a short fix, and at best: add a backup/restore and transfer function. Pretty please!
Good but not complete
The app is mostly well thought-out. I would have liked that the more advanced functions were exposed more prominently rather than through the menus, but that's minor. Also, each configuration setting should reference a way to id on the keyboard itself. That would serve as a quick reference when users don't have the connection cable handy. Lack of file sharing between devices is a big minus as others noted. I am a little discouraged that the app stayed at version 1.0.0 for 2 years. I hope Yamaha doesn't abandon it. If they do, I hope that they will publish the protocol documentation for devs to come up with alternative apps. The piano is too expensive to rely on a single application amid inevitably backward-incompatible iOS updates.
Cannot get it to work with my iPad Air
I do like the app since I can hear the different instruments when playing their demo songs. However, it is strange that I can play the demo songs just fine on my iPhone 5 and my iPad Mini, but it does not play anything when I press the demo songs with my iPad Air. I checked the app settings on my iPad Air, and they match the ones on my iPhone and iPad Mini.
I guess I will have to use either the iPhone or the iPad Mini when I am able to purchase the Yamaha P255 some time in a few months. I think the iPad Mini would be better fit since it has a smaller footprint than the Air.
I do hope Yamaha will try to improve the app with more features and bug fixes.
