Description

Padlock is an application born of frustration. One thing that has always been missing from OS X is the ability to start your screensaver with a simple keyboard shortcut. Padlock solves this problem, and more.

Padlock allows you to lock your system in two different ways: starting the screensaver or putting the screen to sleep. Each of these locking methods has its own global shortcut, making it easy to choose the appropriate method for any given situation.

In addition, Padlock includes a Security Assistant that will check important locking related security settings and notify you of problems. If a problem is found, the Security Assistant will help you remedy it. After that, the Security Assistant will keep an eye on your settings in case something gets changed. If a problem is detected, Padlock will let you know!

Features:

• Secure your Mac with a single keystroke
• Security Assistant that provides advice on how to better secure your Mac
• Monitoring of your security settings so you always know your Mac is secure
• Two different ways of locking your Mac
• User configurable global keyboard shortcuts

Not bad

This is a pretty good application for locking your desktop without having to resort to using hot corners. It defines a keyboard shortcut, CMD+ALT+CTRL+L that will lock your screen when pressed. You can change the shortcut.

The only annoyance is that it leaves a menu bar icon hanging around that might seem useless to some people (such as myself). Although it provides menu items for locking, I only want the keyboard shortcut. I notice that the last note says, "Fixed a bug that was causing Padlock to crash when the menu bar icon was hidden" so maybe this feature is there - but I can't an option for it at all in preferences.

I'm rating it three starts until I can choose to hide the menu bar icon. Other than that (probably minor to most users) annoyance, it works well.

Love Padlock--does exactly what I need

I love this app. Gives me a hotkey to lock my screen. What I really like about it, though, is it doesn't require the screen lock to be activated by the screensaver. If you want your screen to only lock when you tell it to, but not when the screensaver comes on naturally, Padlock does that for you. Very nice nuance there.

One weird thing, though, is that Padlock seems to cause an odd delay for me when Login Items are kicking off. Some apps start up, then a long delay (30 sec or so), then Padlock, then the rest. When I remove Padlock from the Login Items, everything starts right up.

Nice functionality, but why the icon?

Like the other reviewer, i like the hotkey functionality, but do not want another icon clutering up my notification bar.

Unfortunatley, I did not see their review before I bought this. Between the “what’s new” comment stating “… when menu bar icon was hidden”, and the presence of an option titled “show warning icon in the status bar” in the screen-shot, I was certain that hiding the icon would not be a problem.

So now, I either need to stop using this utility, or buy yet another utility which allows hiding status bar icons.

Devs - can you please add this functionality or at least update the description to make it clear that there isnt a native way to hide the icon?
