Still needs vertical alignment and non-contiguous text selection

6.3 was a good update which added two good features, and I am glad that 6.3.1 has been made available to those of us who have not yet upgraded to High Sierra. However, in order for pages to be a real wordprocessor, it needs to bring back non-contiguous text selection, and it needs to support the alignment of horizontally input text along the vertical axis so that text can be centered in both dimensions.. It would also be nice if selecting a page from the thumbnail pane did not deslect whatever one had selected on another page, as this would make text slection over many pages easier. I am glad that book marks were added a few versions back, but at the moment footnotes cannot be bookmarked and therefore cannot be linked to. The following bug persists: when I move the cursor to the right side of the screen in full screen mode, which causes the format pane to appear, it is difficult to select a paragraph style from the dropdown menu because it only remains visible for as long as I click. instead it in necessary to double click. However, whenI select “Inspector, Format”, I am able to click and select a style. Please fix this. Keep the updates coming! I now have faith that apple is actually going to make this into a usable product.

Well, that’s annoying...

When it works, Pages is lovely. However, the most recent update’s “performance upgrades” don’t seem to have done much but increase the annoyance factor. Autocorrect is now seemingly on a hair trigger; type out part of a word and it decides that you meant to type something else. I waste a few minutes per document fixing mistakes that the application decided I should make. It’s especially noticeable on longer words, when the app apparently gets tired of your typing and decides any old word will do in place of the one you were typing. Just as bad, it’ll finish the word while you’re typing it, and you won’t realize that it’s finished for you ’til you’ve added the rest of the word. I’m sure if you’re slow and/or lazy this comes in handy. For those of us who are quick on the keyboard it’s a time-consuming waste… especially if, like me, you’re writing thousands of words per day.

Great!

I wrote an earlier review complaining about all the things Pages used to do but doesn’t in its new incarnation. Some of that’s still true. But I have to say that if this version does what you need it’s great. It looks fantastic, it’s supple and fast, and really a pleasure to use. And as a professional writer I use it A LOT.

It handles long documents flawlessly. And in the last update it’s stopped doing the weird re-sizing thing in the page thumbnail panel that no one could explain to me. I've tried other writing apps but in my opinion nothing comes close.

Another update: the app keeps getting better, with flawless Cloud access and storage. I still keep looking for something better but Pages has it all. Rock-solid dependability plus ease of use.
