Very Good, with room for improvement
As a longtime player of the series, I think the developers did a very fine job with the iPad version.
After playing the PC version on a 20-inch monitor, I find it does take time to get accustomed to the small screen of the iPad. Once you add in the space taken by the sidebar, you end up looking at a rather small piece of the map. Of course you can zoom in and out, but all in all it feels a bit cramped. Maybe the ability to hide the sidebar could improve the feel of the game.
My iPad Air does get quite hot while playing the game, and the battery gets depleted rapidly, something that's not really an issue with the Shenandoa Studios' games, which of course were designed for the iPad from the start.
A feature I find missing is the ability to rename your core units. I use that feature on the PC to quickly identify which units are the strongest (for having received points in attack, initiative, defense, etc.). You will not find that feature here.
Having said that, a good game. If you want to play Panzer Corps while seated in your couch, or on the go, here is your solution for that.
Faithful Port, Great UI
This is a faithful port of an extremely good PC game. IMHO easily the best strategy game and hex based war game on the iPad. (I would like to see John Tiller port Eastern Front; that would be another good one on this platform.) It has played flawlessly on my iPad mini.
The price may seem a little steep but the game goes far beyond what is normally found in an iOS game. If this is your kind of game, you can spend nearly countless hours playing it likely for years to come. I would like to see more games of its depth come to the platform rather than the very inexpensive and mostly non-expansive games that permeate the App Store. (There are other good games, I don't mean to imply otherwise).
You should save your game before using your iPad for other tasks. I have never seen the game crash while playing but it can reset if you go off and do other tasks. I haven't seen this when simply locking the device though.
The King of iPad Strategy Games
Panzer Corps is really an updated version of SSI’s CLASSIC Panzer General PC game from the 1990s but Panzer Corps gives us more of everything that made PG a classic. Fully modernized from the beautiful new unit graphics to the silky smooth user interface this game is a masterpiece. The amazing thing is that the iPad version retains all of the functionality of the PC version (except a scenario editor). There are tons of additional scenarios and battle packs available and you can move game saves back and forth between the iPad and the PC (which is fantastic). I’ve played this game since the original in the 90s and I’ve never tired of it so the replay value is obviously very high. This game is a longtime classic for so many good reasons. Easily one of the very best strategy titles available on the iPad.
I believe Slitherline's Warhammer Armageddon uses the Panzer Corp engine. I’d love to see an iPad port of that spectacular game.
