Still holding out
I have used Paper almost since it was released on the recommendation of a friend. Since the day I switched I have quite preferred it to the regular Facebook app and even have found myself at times on a desktop Facebook and picking up my phone to use Paper instead. However it's become quite evident that the developers aren't developing anything for Paper users. As previous reviews have stated there are features about the app that initially drew people towards it and have been taken away. Also, with such a good user interface I find it confusing as to why it doesn't have all the functionality that the regular App contains. And some of the "functionality" it does show actually just takes you to a mobile version of Facebook if you've deleted your Facebook app (as I did, the day I switched to Paper). With how much all the other apps that Facebook has get updated I don't think it's asking too much for an update. I still haven't given up on Paper, but sometimes a person can only wait so long.
Open letter to FB Paper: What happened?!
Dear Facebook Paper, I've used Paper for a long time and have really enjoyed it. I talked it up whenever someone asked where I found a great article and shared it and they liked it. It's the only reason I use FB messages, (sorry but I'm not installing messenger.) Paper has had so many good points and just a few things that could stand to be improved, (ability to edit posts/comments, better photo management.) But the value of the Paper app just tanked as I found I no longer get content for the Planet and Ideas sections. Those were good sections. I'm down to just Tech and Headlines now. It's been a while, but haven't you yanked a section or two in the past? Not cool. Please don't take Tech. I would literally have no reason to use the app if you pull another of my standbys. I may go search news aggregators right now just because I'm frustrated. Or maybe I spend too much time on Facebook and web content anyway because of Paper and I'm better off without an app like it.
A few big problems
I've used Paper exclusively since it came out. I loved the interface so much more than the standard Facebook app. I had some problems but thought I'd give them some time to iron out the wrinkles.
For one, I can't edit posts. Nothing like realizing I misspelled something and then realizing I have no way to correct it, short of opening the standard app.
Second, I get notifications constantly asking if I know people. "Do you know Sally Smith?" Why, because we have one mutual friend? The other day I was asked if I knew someone that had the same name as one of my friends, but I shared no friends with this person. So they're just basing it on names. And even though I have notifications turned off, I get notifications that random people have added pictures, or updated their status. This can't be turned off. It doesn't do it on the web or the standard fb app.
Third, I don't like that when I open an article, the slightest downward swipe closes the post. This means if I want to scroll up to re-read something, I'm screwed. I like that they're making everything swipe-based, but they need to ease up on the touchiness. And let me scroll up without closing stuff.
These three things, which they evidently aren't going to fix, are causing me to go back to the boring old Facebook app.
