PAPERCUT - Enhanced Reading Experience

By ustwo

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

PAPERCUT is an experimental enhanced reading experience for iPad. It includes three short stories by world famous authors Richard Beard, Nadifa Mohamed and Laura Dockrill. It transforms simple prose into an interactive, multi-sensory reading experience, automatically triggering relevant video, animation, image sequences and sound content, enhancing the narrative. The reader can simply and elegantly scroll through a truly interactive experience with seamless swipes.

ustwo™, in collaboration with Shortfire Press, is making available works from three leading British authors - novelist and non-fiction writer Richard Beard's 'James Joyce, EFL Teacher', award winning Nadifa Mohamed's 'Summer in the City' and poet and illustrator Laura Dockrill's Topple.

"PAPERCUT is an innovative and interactive way to tell stories. For writers it's the first glimpse of how writing skills and technology can come together to create a new art-form," commented novelist, non-fiction writer and Director of the National Academy of Writing in London, Richard Beard. "I loved working on my story with ustwo™. We've produced a story like no other I've ever written."

Once you have selected a story to read from the three available, scroll through the text using the scrollbar on the right hand side of the screen, or if you prefer you can simply move the text with your fingertips.

Interesting, creative, but need a lot more work

This app is very interesting and creative, in a way. The sad news is that is all it is. The interface is very difficult as I have to place my fingers on the words that I am reading in order to continue to read it. When I read I want to read words that are visible, not just in a small area of my iPad, text area seems to be less then 25% of the iPad screen, if this was on an iPhone, it would be unreadable. It is a shame, this type of story telling I first saw back in 1993 with a compact book reader that had voice overs, sound, and pictures throughout the book. It is sad they could not improve it that much. In the future I can see this being a great program, if everything is better integrated, with a much better interface. A new way to read books? No but a definite new way to enjoy them.

It's a creative and interesting way to present the reading experience. But in fact, I think the reading area is too small even in iPad. Maybe the multimedia part can be dynamically shown or turned off/on.

Great concept, less than stellar material

With more relatable or at the very least more interesting subject matter, this would be a hit.
