REVIEW | Ranked among the top 30 Best Apps of the Year 2009 in the UK iTunes store -- iTunes Rewind 2009

REVIEW | "A couple of years ago, a Mac OS X application came along and blew my socks off. Now, the company behind Papers, Mekentosj, has done it again, this time by bringing its killer app to the iPhone in a timely manner. It doesn't disappoint." -- Ars technica, 5 stars

REVIEW | "When I found Papers on the app store, I realized that I had found a solution that was not only easier, but helped me conduct research in ways I didn't even know I needed with a mobile device." --, 5 stars

OVERVIEW | Papers was redesigned from scratch to be a perfect and beautiful fit to both the iPad and the iPhone and iPod touch. Browse through the hundreds of articles in your library with the flick of a finger, lookup the papers written by a certain author or published in that well-known journal, organize your library in collections and add your rating or flag great works. Papers comes with a stunning PDF viewer built-in, especially on the iPad you never want to deal with normal print-outs anymore: jump between pages, follow hyperlinks, highlight text and create notes on your PDFs simply with a touch of your finger!

Papers of course synchronizes wirelessly with Papers on your Mac. But it also works great as a stand-alone application as it lets you download PDFs straight from the publishers onto your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, or import articles from your Dropbox. You can also add PDFs through iTunes or import them from an email or website. Did you annotate a PDF in another app? No problem, Papers will import notes and highlights and display them on your iPad, too.

But what if you forgot to add that one paper? Or you want to check out what's new this week? Papers comes with 8 built-in search engines that give you access to millions of articles at any time: ACM, NASA-ADS, arXiv, Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, JSTOR, Pubmed, and Web of Science. Search the world's largest repositories, visit the publisher's websites and even download new PDFs to your library and start reading straight away, it's that simple. And you can even wirelessly exchange articles with other Papers for iOS users as well, or send an email to your friends and colleagues to tell them about your new findings and ideas.

Visit our web site for a screencast to find out more!

REQUIREMENTS | We recommend at least 100Mb of free space for storage of PDFs and article metadata. Use of built-in search engines and web browser functionality requires an active internet connection. Some search engines may require an institutional subscription. Syncing requires a wireless network connection and Papers for Mac (separate purchase).

Great but could always be better

I love papers and use it all the time. I find I actually prefer it on my iPad to my computer but then hate not being able to house all my papers on here.

That said there are things that can be improved. Good notes is perfect for taking notes on papers and yes you can export to that program, but it would be nice if the two worked more together so that I could see my notes on the paper when I open it in papers.

I have had trouble getting it to sink correctly with my version of papers on my computer (1.9). It seems to assume that if I have a bidirectional sync but have added a new folder on my iPad that I want it to sync it with my computer and then remove it from the iPad. Sure this is fixed by then selecting it after the first sync and then re syncing, but that is a pain. I haven't upgraded papers on my computer since they only go through paypal. I am really disappointed about that.

Otherwise I think this is great.

Does not allow "find" or "search" option on ipad version

I really liked this app and the ability to sync articles with my computer. However, the iPad version lacks the ability to "search" or "find" words within an individual article. This feature is only available on the laptop version. This is a total letdown for me because I use this app for work, so instead off just carrying my ipad to work (which would be more convenient), I have to take my macbook just so I can utilize the search option which allows me to search through articles more efficiently.

bad bad bad. Abandonware

Strongly suggest staying away from this always broken app and it's paid upgrades.

Update 2:
They never was able to fix this app, and now they charge you another $10 to upgrade to Papers 3. Wow.

Despite the latest "bug fix" or "stability improvement", this is software is still barely usable. I tried to download a PDF today and it always crash, and it is from PLoS website, which is pretty standard and commonly used.

Original review:

Honestly since this app was originally released, it has been very buggy and lagging behind in terms of PDF annotation etc. The interface is mostly clunky.

I am quite disappointed because I have seen other apps such as iAnnotate DF greatly improved. Not Papers! Annotation is still not embedded in the PDF: a lock in? No thanks!

Some bugs were fixed and small improvements came with last couple of updates, but I still can barely recommend this app to other people.
