The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) has a long, proud history of producing quality mapping content for the Appalachian Trail community. You get the quality of the PATC paper maps in electronic from. I have the latest Garmin topos and this app has far better maps for the SNP area. I have never had a problem with it. It takes up 182mb which is hardly noticed on my 16gb Itouch. You can add your own markers and pick off lat/lons to manually enter in the gps. If you have an iPhone I believe the app will automatically show your location on the map. If you keep track of you approximate position on a map you can use the elevation from a gps to pretty accurately locate your position on a trail using the contour lines.
The only draw back is you need battery power to see the map. This is not a big deal as my Itouch battery last a very long time but for safety keep this in mind. I usually have the paper maps with me but this app is what I use most of the time. There is tons of extra texted information on points if interest. This is an excellent app that is well worth to money.
For those who use the PATC maps regularly or hike the SNP regularly, this is a must have. If you use this app as your only guide for a multi day hike (and I have), finding a way to conserve battery power can be an issue, but it can be done and performs wonderfully. Advice: learn how to use all the features and you will be much better off.
File Size is too Large
It seems to work fine, however the App itself takes way too much space. Not sure if it's just the maps or all the photos ( I sure don't need to waste memory space storing PATC photos - I'm out hiking to see my own photos) Would be nice to see them refine the app down to a more minimized amount of info - until then I've removed the app. Would also like to use the app on my desktop computer to set routes that could be relayed to the phone app
