What's New

Version 4.0.1

Fixed: A bug for some you that upgraded from an old version where you were not logged in. We were unable to identify your local station and manually selecting it wasn’t working. Sorry about all of that! The app should auto-localize you just fine now.

Fixed: A Chromecast bug where some of you would hear audio but would not see video after sponsorship messages played. You should now both hear AND SEE your videos, which we think is a much better experience.

What’s new:
- Browse through episodes faster with shows organized by seasons
- Watch a preview for the next episode before you dive in with a “preview” button on videos
- Explore new themed collections within select shows
- New “Spotlight” collection on the homescreen highlights popular new videos
- “My Videos” page now includes your favorite shows
- Each show will now feature similar shows you might also like

What’s improved:
- Row titles are now tappable to see all the content within that section
- Improved video labels include video type, season, and more

Surprisingly annoying app with no Feedback or Support feature.

bored_to_tears

OK, I love PBS, but I am so frustrated with this app! The content is probably great, even though so far it has crashed a few times, and the sidebar menu is only so-so. The seriously annoying thing is HOW the app works - It takes forever to load the page listing all the programs, so searching for programs to watch is a time-consuming pain. FIrst the app loads a long list of programs, then when you click on a program, when you're done you have to reload the entire list of programs page again, no choice to go "Back" the only choice is to reload the page again every time - the app doesn't retain the list is downloaded just a second ago, I don't mean that if I quit & reopen I have to reload, I mean within the same session the app makes you reload the page after every time you look at a program. And when I tried to send Feedback, instead of this negative review, just like on this iTunes Store page next to the "Write a Review" button is an "App Support" app - and it takes you NOT to app Support but to a page listing all the PBS apps! Same thing in the app - The app has a Feedback button but it takes you to a list of other apps, ebooks to buy, etc. When I called me local PBS station to try to get a feedback email address they said their wasn't an email address but I could call long distance to Virginia because it seems PBS doesn't have an 800 number.
How can PBS make such a dumb app?

Deficient & disappointing

Whathappened To Adblock

Things that once worked on the previous app no longer work, & now shows are unwatchable -- most won't start at all, & the few that do start & the crash. And the search function is nearly entirely useless. If I go to the Internet, I can find what I want immediately. Using the search function, it most often gives me nothing at all of what I'm searching for. So, I've completely stopped using it. AGAIN. In the 8 years I've had an iPhone, only the immediately previous app was of any use (altho its search fx was also partially useless.) But then as now there is still no viewing history, & there's no way to go back to something you had been watching; you have to start it over & try to find your place again. And as I said, there's still no viewing history. And as before, some of the things you find on the app & queue up in your "to watch" list turn out to not be viewable at all thru the app.
And to make matters worse, we were FORCED on to the new app. There was no choice in it. And then when you switch over (as the old one will no longer open), you find out it's nearly entirely useless.
All of these problems have plagued PBS apps from the very beginning, and still do.
And this makes it all the more bewildering as to WHY they've either never been addressed at all, or never successfully.
Don't waste your time of your devices' memory. Just search thru the Interwebs: that route at least works.

Update March 2018: Knocked off another star. Several years now and the app never improves substantially. Now the content is diminishing, too, if you’re not a subscriber—too bad for me since my TV doesn’t pick up PBS’s signal, and online is my only option. Whatever happened to the idea that public television’s purpose was to make quality programming available for those who can’t afford to pay for it?

Update: on the plus side, this version is more pleasing to look at and makes finding shows faster and easier. But the improvements are offset by having the schedule limited to one day at a time. Plus you have to select days individually, you can't just scroll through. Adding insult to injury, 2/3 of the screen is empty space. At least the playback controls work better now so I'll add a star to my previous rating. (Though I was tempted to withhold it based on the obnoxious intrusion of the request to register. If it were required, I'd boot the app. These endless pleas for registration are past tiresome.)

Previous review: As much as I appreciate its content, the organization is awful, features are few. Most annoying is that at 40 minutes into a show, when I tried to back up slightly to catch something I missed, the app insisted on taking me back to the very beginning and would not allow any other option. The programming deserves better.
