Deficient & disappointing
Things that once worked on the previous app no longer work, & now shows are unwatchable -- most won't start at all, & the few that do start & the crash. And the search function is nearly entirely useless. If I go to the Internet, I can find what I want immediately. Using the search function, it most often gives me nothing at all of what I'm searching for. So, I've completely stopped using it. AGAIN. In the 8 years I've had an iPhone, only the immediately previous app was of any use (altho its search fx was also partially useless.) But then as now there is still no viewing history, & there's no way to go back to something you had been watching; you have to start it over & try to find your place again. And as I said, there's still no viewing history. And as before, some of the things you find on the app & queue up in your "to watch" list turn out to not be viewable at all thru the app.
And to make matters worse, we were FORCED on to the new app. There was no choice in it. And then when you switch over (as the old one will no longer open), you find out it's nearly entirely useless.
All of these problems have plagued PBS apps from the very beginning, and still do.
And this makes it all the more bewildering as to WHY they've either never been addressed at all, or never successfully.
Don't waste your time of your devices' memory. Just search thru the Interwebs: that route at least works.
New Version as Bad as the Old
At first I was excited PBS was replacing its awful iPhone app w/ a newer version. Then reality started to sit in. The new & revised version is just as bad as the old one. Open it up early in the morning, the app gives you the correct date BUT the programming for the PREVIOUS day. In order to pick both a date and PBS channel (Houston has 3 choices), I have to hold my iPhone screen at a straight up 90 angle before it accepts my choice. Anything less than a 90 degree angle, then the wheel starts sliding all over the place. With the old PBS app, try to open a program such as NOVA or Independent Lens to find out what the story was about, you got nothing. No info! With the new app, sometimes you get info, sometimes you get nothing. Still disappointing, PBS. As for the new colours, too much is a pale shade of grey. Hard, very hard, to see against a white background. Last, what to see what a second or third channel offers on the same day, the schedule automatically resets itself not to the current time programming but to 6-8 am programs. The tilting of my iPhone screen to change channels is nothing short of ridiculous, PBS. Overall the new version rates a "D-."
Thank you for finally integrating!
Love the new app. Best of all, love that there is ONE that works on all my devices. I get burnt out on the one for iPhone/one for iPad thing, just wastes a lot of space. So far, this new version works great, haven't had any trouble watching episodes, or choosing what I want to watch. I am especially enjoying the film festival shorts. I have read the bad reviews, but I can't seem to find what the issues are. Yes, it could probably use some sorting features, and maybe some more archived content, for those of us that like to go back over and over again, but all in all, I think job well done. Just keep updating.
