Customer Reviews

Excellent app that continues to improve

PCalc is the rare app that manages to add features without cluttering the user interface or getting in your way. I was a satisfied customer when I first bought it a Version 1, and I'm even more satisfied now.

PCalc's list of features—unit conversions; base conversions; built-in constants; RPN mode; multi-line display (with your choice for the value of "multi"); user-defined functions and unit conversions; and selectable color themes, keyboard layouts, and digit styles—is impressive, but what's more impressive is the care with which they are implemented. The popup indicators that tell you which key you're pressing, the sliding display that stays on screen as you choose a conversion or change a preference, the stack display that also shows you the contents of the memory slots—these are the small things that need to be done right if the features are to be usable. PCalc does them right.

And with version 3.3.x, PCalc lets you create your own custom keyboard layouts. This, combined with user-defined functions and conversions, allows you to turn it into almost any type of calculator you want. You're getting, in effect, an infinite number of calculators.

A few years ago, the batteries in my physical calculator died, and I never replaced them. PCalc is what I reach for.

PCalc is the best (though Apple wants to take that away from you)

UPDATE: Apple has reversed course. The PCalc Notification Extension is allowed to stay.

I use PCalc on both OS X and iOS. I regularly use Windows and Linux as well. I miss PCalc on those platforms. I wish the app were on every system I need (well at least those with a graphical user interface anyway).

However Apple is screwing around with the app. They created a new notification extension capability for iOS which TLA Systems, as a good loyal platform developer, supported with a great extension upon release of iOS 8. Apple used PCalc as a launch example to demonstrate how powerful the new extension feature can be. Now Apple is kicking PCalc and TLA Systems to the curb by forcing the developer to remove the extension.

It’s Apples ecosystem and we all have to play by their rules, sure. However we should also stick up for the developers that do right by us. Let Apple know that you don’t appreciate bad behavior on their part. Bait and switching the rules on exceptional developers such as TLA Systems is not appreciated.

In any case even without the PCalc notification extension it’s still a great app and the best calculator app you’ll find on any phone, tablet or computer.

A Developer's Perspective

I'm an iPhone developer and don't often write app reviews thinking they'll be misconstrued as biased, but PCalc is just too good to not leave a review. I can say with confidence as a developer that PCalc is one of the most polished apps in the App Store. The attention to detail is nothing short of remarkable and should be an example to all developers.

My favorite "feature" is how quickly the app launches. It's ready almost instantly (on a 3GS) and I can say from experience that acheiving such a quick launch is no small feat.

Funny thing, I don't actually use PCalc for much more than basic calculations, but all the refinements (swipe to step forward and backward, font choices, theme choices, the paper tape, color coding of buttons, etc.) make even basic calculations quick, easy, and even kind of fun.

If you're still using the built in calculator, stop. This is worth $10 just to see how much thought and polish can go into somehing as seemingly simple as a calculator.
