"The crème de la crème of PDF editing and annotating applications." - Macworld, 4.5 mice
Edit PDFs easily with PDFpenPro! Add text, images and signatures. Make changes, fix typos, resize images, fill out forms, and redact sensitive information. Use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to digitize scanned documents.
PDFpenPro is for those who want to go beyond PDFpen to create interactive forms, add and edit tables of contents, and convert websites into PDFs!
New! PDFpenPro 6
New interface makes PDF editing faster and easier than ever, and it's optimized for retina displays! We've also added the ability to export PDFs to Microsoft Word. There's much more -- see the list of new features below.
PDFpenPro users also enjoy two additional new Pro features: edit document permissions (restrict saving, printing, editing, etc.) and automatically generate form fields in a non-interactive form.
• Make changes and mark up PDFs
With PDFpenPro, you can add text, images and signature to your PDFs. You can even correct text in the original PDF. Use PDFpenPro’s tools to highlight, underline, or strikethrough text. Add comments and notes to share with others.
Remove private information with the redaction feature. Select the text you want to omit, and redact it with a black box or a blank space--either way, the text is removed from the document. Remove a word, phrase or social security number throughout a document with search-and-redact or search-and-remove.
And now you can easily access your annotations! In PDFpenPro 6, filter annotations by type, and even print them out as a list.
• Paperless Workflow
Reduce the amount of paper in your office. Scan documents directly into PDFpenPro and then use PDFpenPro’s OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on the scanned text, so you can search, edit, and copy it.
No more printing! You can add your signature to a PDF contract and email it back. It's the end of the old routine of print first, then sign, then scan or fax.
Go mobile! Get PDFpen for iPad & iPhone on the iTunes App Store, and edit your PDFs seamlessly on Mac, iPad or iPhone, thanks to iCloud and Dropbox.
• Easy to Use
In PDFpenPro’s Library, you can store frequently-used images, signatures and text so they are always at your fingertips when you want to add them to a PDF. New in version 6: reorder your Library items via drag-and-drop!
Drag-and-drop thumbnails to rearrange pages or to combine pages from different PDFs. Deleting a page is as simple as selecting its thumbnail and pressing the Delete key.

This is a killer app!
I bought PDFPen Pro after a one-month trial of Acrobat… Smile's version seemed to do all I need, at a reasonable price.
Since then, I've used it for internal documents and general office editing… but also to proof a 550-page book and serveral long-form product manuals. It's been fast, flexible, and relatively bullet-proof. I occasionally still open PDFs in Preview and Acrobat, just to check compatibility of some note or edit I'd added in PDFPen Pro… but Smile's version is my go-to software, and I keep it running whenever I've got my Mac turned on.
I've also written their support a couple of times, to ask how for tricks that aren't in the help files. They've always been responsive, explaining how to do what I want or suggesting a workaround.
Simple, well-documented, and unbelievably simple
I needed to create interactive forms, and was looking at the $400+ Adobe Acrobat Professional. Before I made that jump, I decided to check the App Store, just in case something existed that might do what I needed to do at a better price. In my case, the issue was changing several hundred pages of non-interactive PDF forms I've built over the years for my writing courses into interactive forms.
I decided to give PDFpenPro 6 a shot, just hoping that it would get my job done.
I watched the video documentation on making existing PDF forms interactive, found the ONE BUTTON solution to my problem, held my breath, tested it out on my first form…
It was flawless. The form INSTANTLY had a neat interactive form box for every line and empty table box on the page. I cannot remember the last time software so completely impressed me by doing what it said it would do better than I expected.
This gets both five stars and my thanks to the folks who created it, and who evidently understand the concept of "just works." Thanks, folks.
Good Application and Excellent Support
Good software, excellent support.
I bought this application to scan files directly to searchable PDF format. It does that well. I have no trouble editing PDF files. For my needs it is an excellent low cost replacment for Acrobat. I used the customer service and they were excellent.
The program starts up slower than Preview, so if all you want to do is quickly read a PDF you may still find Preview the best choice. Once PDFpen is opened I found no performace issues. I would make the same statement about Acrobat.
You may have some difficulty if you have a highly restrictive firewall on your Mac. I discovered that with McAfee firewall set to the defaults for a public network the internal communications used by PDFpen for OCR causes a failure. This is not a very unusual use case but the support folks were very helpful in finding the problem - even while I was still just testing the demo version. (Once I set the McAfee Firewall to the defaults for a “home or work" network I had no problems.)
