The best digital handwriting on iPad. Penultimate combines distraction-free, natural handwriting and sketching with the power of Evernote’s sync and search. Take class or meeting notes, journal your thoughts, or outline your next big idea—in the office or on the go. From the first stroke, Penultimate makes the experience of pen and paper more productive.

Notes and drawings look spectacular in black or colored ink. Our inking technology produces pen strokes that look natural, and Wrist Protection prevents stray marks for writers of all grips. Choose from a number of paper styles, or import an image to create personalized paper.

We worked closely with Adonit to create the stylus we've always wanted: the Jot Script Evernote Edition, the first true precision-point stylus. Penultimate integrates tightly with the stylus and together they make digital handwriting the experience it should be. It’s like writing with your favorite pen. Available now in the Evernote Market.

Penultimate lets you work on any part of the page effortlessly. To zoom in on a location on the page, simply pinch in and start writing. With Penultimate's Drift feature enabled, the page will move along with you, automatically adjusting to the pace you are working at.

Sign in to your Evernote account in the Penultimate app to organize your Penultimate notes in notebooks, separated by topic, project, or category. Your Penultimate notes are synced to Evernote automatically, so you can find and share them across all of your devices.

No matter how you prefer to organize your work, Penultimate makes it easy to find the notes you need. Penultimate processes your notes so you can search for handwritten text in the app. Save and browse your work in notebooks and insert, delete, duplicate, and reorganize pages any way you like within them.

Penultimate is free to download and use. Pair it with Evernote Premium or Evernote Plus for unlimited access to Penultimate’s Paper Shop, bigger uploads, and many other great features.

Disasterous ruination of a beautiful app

Below is my original review. After "integrating" with Evernote, I now change the rating on my favorite app to zero stars. Absolute crap. Does not work. I can't export any notebooks. Meaning all my work is lost even though I can see it on the screen! Support was less than unhelpful. Zero stars for now. Zero. There was no upgrade. I would consider this a new app that destroys all the things that made the real penultimate great. Penultimate, please make the real app available as a separate app. Why did I hit update?!?! Worst electronic day ever!!!!! Burn in hell Evernote!!!!!

Old review:
Intuitive, very very useful. Easily the most useful app I have. Love the simplicity. The tutorial will have you up and running in less than 3 minutes. A Wired Top 10 for a reason. Currently sublime in its perfection. Please do not clutter this app with marginally useful features in the future! Please! Would like to add video and cut and paste text and web pages but not if it clutters the app.

Crash Machine: From Bad to Worse

As others have noted, since Evernote's acquisition of this once-solid app, quality has declined. I used this regularly in meetings for quite some time, and it was a reliable, stable app.

I started noticing problems with the first post-acquisition "update". From there the quality continued to degrade with each successive update. It finally reached the point where the app was completely unusable. IF I could get it to launch at all, it crashed or froze within minutes.

I was willing to chalk it up to the aging hardware of my old iPad 3, and I looked forward to being able to use it again when I replaced my iPad. I bought an iPad Air 2 a couple of weeks ago, and performance is surprisingly even worse. Most of the time the app won't even launch. It shows a splash screen then shuts down. Occasionally it will launch and then crash when I try to open one of my notebooks. I've been able to completely open a notebook and view notes only once. Then I made the mistake of trying to scroll to a different page, and the app locked.

Over the years I've seen a number of promising products destroyed when they were acquired by another company. This is one more unfortunate example.

Great and improve your prev/next page button

Issue: One UI feature you team need consider improving: The next/previous page jumping buttons which are located in the bottom.

Problem: when I use zoom-in window (always favor this write-in mode), my palm will unexpectedly touch the two buttons thus it constantly jump away.

Solution: re-design the UI. Put the two button on the main tool panel. And when zoom-in window is used, add the two button on the upper window edge, just next to turn-on/off button of auto-line-position-fitting.

Go get it.

"Come on Evernote, penultimate is to the hand-writing app as what IE of Microsoft is to internet browser. " Not true any more.

"Your app still cannot handle big note file. I have long and complicated notes for my algorithm class and ready to export PDF. Penultimate never generate file even it notifies me "exporting PDF", while it works for blank note. " Not true anymore.

Congratulations, you are on the way to make another great tool.
