Best app of its kind.
This is, by far, the best personal finance app and the only one of its kind that I consider a must have. It is intuitive, easy to use, beautifully designed, and helpful. It is very “set it and forget it” and simple (yet feature rich) for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time fiddling with their personal finance app.
The spending tracker almost always categorizes transactions correctly the first time, eliminating the need to spend a long time setting up categories and re-categorizing individual transactions, which has always been my biggest complaint with other apps/services.
Investing is where Personal Capital really shines! The portfolio analysis is more detailed than one would expect with a free service. I also enjoy the (optional) weekly email telling me if my portfolio is up or down and by what percentage. This feature alone makes the app worthwhile.
An incredibly frustrating APP
Personal Capital is incredibly frustrating and really not usable. Frustrating because you can see the value, if it worked properly, and not usable because there are so many problems with the gathering of data.
Let me start by saying you will have all sorts of issues with the app collecting data and the only help it will provide is to tell you to "try again" in 24 to 48 hours. I cannot do that. I have specific times dedicated to looking at my finances and I can't just say "oops" can't do it now.
Second, it just gets things wrong. The latest is dividends received from vanguard post as expenses not income.
Finally, it can't handle two step verification sign ons well at all.
All of this leads to the fact you never get a singular dashboard on your finances as promised. There are always caveats that this or that process did not update and so it is incomplete.
This does not stop them from constantly soliciting you for "advisor services". I dint Ming that necessarily but I can assure them that if they cannot make the software work there is absolutely no way I am engaging them in financial advisory.
My advice is skip this app. Too many bugs and problems for it to be useful except for maybe the most basic situation - and even that I question.
Wish there was ability to input future transactions
The investment analysis is top notch, but I like to see not just where my cash flow is, but where it's headed. My bills are entered 30 days in advance so I know if I'm running too lean in the checking account. Give me the ability to add recurring bills and manually enter transactions, and I give 5 stars and say sayonara to Quicken. Let me edit some of my investments so that they show up in something other than the "other" category, and your position as top financial app is ensured. Even a manual entry that has to be confirmed by your company would be suitable.
