What's New in Version 2.16.0
- Apple HomeKit compatibility for Hue accessories
Philips Hue is extending its Apple HomeKit compatibility for Hue accessories: Hue tap, Hue dimmer switch and Hue motion sensor. Meaning with a press of a button, or movement of your body, you can activate your favorite Apple Home app scenes. To set up automations, you need an Apple TV (4th generation) with tvOS 10 or an iPad with iOS 10 or later.
- Manage third party routines
A new section “From other apps” is added to "Routines". Here you can enable, disable or delete routines created in other apps.
- Improved software updates
A new section "Automatic update" is added to "Software update". Now you can enable and specify time to automatically install software updates and you can check if your Hue devices are up to date.
- Reset Hue accessories to default.
If you configured an accessory in a third party app, or experience unexpected behavior, now you can restore the default Hue behavior. Just scroll down in the accessory details screen.
- App icon and splash screen updated.
- Various bug fixes and stability improvements.
Update mismatch with HomeKit
I don’t understand how or why, but one scene I’ve created always has an error stating that a scene has been updated outside of the app and Hue always refuses to update to fix the mismatch. This has happened over several versions of the app and has never been fixed. The only way for me to fix the issue has been to always wipe everything off of my Bridge and start completely over. I’ve never changed the scene outside of the Hue app. It gets really annoying to always have to start from scratch to resolve the issue because Philips refuses to fix this issue. If I keep pressing the “Update” button, it just sends me to Hue’s permissions in the Settings app. This does not help with anything.
Buggy and lacking common-sense features
It works when you control light manually, but I consistently find that routines (scheduled ones and “home and away”) will not run properly. And yes, I have reset/restarted everything.
Additionally, this app lacks many features you would think a smart light setup would have, like scenes that control multiple rooms at once. The app just seems incomplete and unfinished.
The “Wake Up” routine won’t allow you to fade into any colored scene (just “bright”), so you must set up a separate routine for that. You can do some color fading routines through the “hue labs” section of the app, but many of those features should be easier to access and a schedule as part of a routine.
Credit where it’s due
I, like most Hue customers, have been very critical of this app and the previous one for years. They were both very flawed, with basic features missing, confusing UI, and frustrating bugs.
But credit where it’s due: the app is pretty dang great now. It does everything I want, without the need for third party apps, Hue Labs recipes, or the Hue 1.0 app.
Congratulations to the dev team for working hard and delivering an app that is worthy of the Hue hardware.
