Solid port

A port of the DS game, "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney", Capcom did a good job of handling the transfer of DS to iOS. The game itself is great, featuring an intriguing story with fascinating characters and hilarious dialog. The game is mainly text based, with very little voice acting. The gameplay centers around the main character, Phoenix Wright, going through several court cases as a defense attorney. Although it may not seem like the best premise, it is actually proves to be interesting, as half the game revolves around gathering clues while the other half centers around the collected evidence while you defend your clients in court. The gameplay can definitely be challengning at times, if not a bit strict. The game tends to be inconsistent as well, as you are sometimes forced to do a certain action in a certain situation, but once a similar situation is forced upon again, the previous action you were forced to do will not work. Some of the DS-exclusive features transfer solely to the touch screen, which doesn't make much sense considering most iOS devices could make use of features such as the microphone (used in the DS version) and the motion controls. The gameplay may be too slow paced for some, and over time it can get repetitive. There's not much replay value, as the game's dialog doesn't change and the game plays out the same way every time. It may be a bit pricey, but you might be surprised how much you actually enjoy "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney".

The quintessential courtroom "melodramedy"

Don't expect a faithful simulation of the law profession here--just a raucous good time. The game is set in Japan, which means that courtroom proceedings were inevitably going to seem strange to Westerners in one way or another. But after a few minutes of playing, it becomes clear that no country or legal tradition can ever hope to match the hilarity, suspense, and general craziness of Phoenix Wright. The game's dialogue is constantly--almost schizophrenically--switching gears: one moment you are playing a light-hearted comedy, engaging in a bit of sexually suggestive small-talk with your boss/mentor....then, out of nowhere, you find yourself in the middle of a brazenly melodramatic soap opera....until it all goes back to being funny, etc. It is slightly insane but it works, for at least two reasons: 1) first, the cases are all exquisitely written; 2) second, the game never takes itself too seriously, and neither should you.

Make no mistake, though: actually *playing* the cases in this game will make you think, and some of the later cross-examinations (which play out like abstract logic puzzles) will surprise you.

Ultimately, the game strikes a fine balance between thought-provoking puzzle-solving, and tongue-in-cheek melodramedy. Highly recommended.

Yay Capcom!

I'm extremely excited and glad that I finally got the game and it's amazing! A few minor complaints, though...apparently, in the porting process a few things were forgotten. For example, a female character (whose breasts bounce when she winks) makes an innuendo about Phoenix at one point. Suicides are mentioned. The whole game is about murders. And still, it has a 9+ rating. I just don't think that's quite acceptable considering the content in the game. 12+ would be more suitable. Other complaint is what everyone else wants. You guys totally need to port Justice For All and Trials and Tribulations. As well as possibly Apollo Justice and even Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. Also, if anyone from Capcom is reading this, you guys should know something. Every Ace Attorney fan wants Gyakuten Kenji 2 in the USA! Also, Professor Layton vs. Turnabout Trial is wanted here, also. And I'm an Ace Attorney fan myself, so don't think I haven't heard about Gyakuten Saiban 5. Everyone wants to know if Apollo or Phoenix will be the main character, or maybe someone completely new. I personally think it should go something like:
Phoenix Wright: 3 games
Apollo Justice: 3 games
Miles Edgeworth: 3 games
Crossovers: 3 games (one for each protagonist)
