Be clear on what it does and doesn’t do
If you’re just looking for a program that makes it easier to do the initial rough cutout of an object for later cleanup, then this will get the job done. However, don’t expect a production-ready cutout to come from this directly. I tried it with several photos, with simple and complex backgrounds, and while the general cutout outline was fine, it required additional refinement passes in the program to filter out all the parts of the background (and in some with complex/noisy backgrounds I was unable to filter it entirely without a level of detail editing that defeated the quick/easy purpose of this program). Also, even with smoothing turned to maximum, the outlines were still very rough, and looked obviously cut out. To add them into a new background and make them look clean, a lot of additional fine-detail editing would be required. If you look closely at the example images posted here, you can see these issues (even more clearly on the larger images on their website), so be sure you’re happy with that level of cutout precision, and that it won’t produce perfect cutouts that can be dropped into a project without significant additional editing, before buying - I got it on sale, and at that price it was absolutely worth it for me, but I’m not sure I would have paid full price for the functionality that it provides.
WHY DIDN’T I GET THIS SOONER?????
I have to use a lot of graphics in my work and the program that I used for YEARS for editing them is not compatible with my new Mac. I have been SO FRUSTRATED! I made a few things KINDA work by cropping and juggling them back and forth between 3 different programs. It might take an hour or more to reduce the background to where the the graphic was “not great”… but at least “usable”. I just downloaded this app and I cannot believe how WONDERFUL and FAST IT IS!!! What used to take me HOURS to do, I was able to do in less than 30 seconds!! AND… the results are NOT just “usable… they are GREAT!!!! I feel like an idiot for not getting this sooner! THANK YOU! THANK YOU - for making my life so much easier!!
Crashes so it is unusable
I very rarely will write a review unless a product is a waste of money. I will rate good products or average products with stars. Each time I have tried to use this product, it has crashed and I lost my work. Even when I tried to save the file to ensure I had some work before moving on, it triggered a crash as well, and when I opened the file I saved that seemed to lead to the crash, the file was empty. Apprently I wasted money on this app. If I ever find that it becomes more stable on my MacBook Pro Retina w/16GB of RAM (it should hadle this app easily), I’ll update my rating. That is unlikely though, because how often will I use a program to do work if it crashed every time I have tried to use it. I regret purchasing this app, it was wasted money.
