App is not that great
Searching for chickens and they don’t show up. Is this an app for all chickens or just those chosen few? I thought I would be able to get info on different breeds.
Informative and great eye candy
[Disclosure: I didn't personally know the creators of this app, but did respond to a request for beta testers, and offered feedback prior to release.]
I raise a small flock of chickens for eggs, and allow the chickens full run (and forage) of our multi-acre property. I'm always looking for different breed varieties, especially those that well do well in foraging (which along with organic feed, adds richness to their eggs) and dealing with the Texas heat. This app stands out amongst the few I've seen. An amazing amount of information is packed in this application. The interface is intuitive, and you get more than one way to search: via the main screen, or in "Eggspert" mode where the search mode is much sleeker and offers finer control (but just as much fun).
A major plus: I could see this app being used by a harried parent, giving her/his iPhone to the child and saying "Here, look at this!" That's how easy and fun this app is to use.
This App Needs More Work
I bought this app when I was first getting into chicken-keeping, and I made most of my initial choices based on the breed information provided.
A couple of years into chicken-keeping and I've found significant errors and misinformation.
One is error "Maran", when the correct name is "Marans", whether singular or plural.
Misinformation exists such as statements that certain breeds are not good foragers, or don't free range. As an experienced chicken owner, all of our multiple breeds both free range over our property and forage every single edible item they find.
In addition, there is other misinformation regarding egg production, egg size and temperament.
We have Barred (Plymouth) Rock, Rhode Island Red, Production Red, Delaware, Australorp, Ameraucana, Sussex, Barnevelder, Orpington, and Wyandotte.
My advice is to research everything you can get your hands on, talk to other chicken people and don't make your decisions based on this app. The app seems to have been written by one person with limited experience - Mother Earth News is usually dead-on, but missed the mark this time.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
