Picky: Filter, queue, and play your music

By Charles Joseph

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Featured in Macworld’s “Alternatives to Apple’s iOS Music app”, Picky is for people particular about their music, giving you full control over how you browse and listen to your albums and songs. Or as MacStories puts it, “a powerful music utility that is perfect for getting reacquainted with your favorite tunes”.

‣ Picky keeps your Artists and Albums lists uncluttered by hiding those with only a few songs – simply adjust the filters to taste.

‣ Queue up tracks to play later: simply swipe to the left on a song until the ‘+’ icon appears and turns solid orange, then let go to enqueue it.

‣ Use Picklists to quickly play (or enqueue) groups of songs – like playing an album without its bonus tracks.

‣ Picky lets you easily filter your Songs and Albums lists by genre (or by multiple genres). You can do things like quickly put together a mix by opening the filter, tapping on a few genres, and then closing it and tapping Shuffle.

‣ Easily sort the main Albums list or artists’ album lists with just a couple taps: by title, release date, duration, or by date added to your library.

‣ You can use the Artists and Songs filters to keep singles and one-hit-wonders tucked away, or bring them into focus when you really want to listen to them.

‣ Picky intelligently combines both grouping by artist and by album artist, so you'll always find your songs where you expect them to be. But if you prefer just one of the groupings, you can easily change that with a setting.

‣ Quickly see the list of your currently playing songs by simply swiping up in the Now Playing view.

‣ Picky is designed for iOS 10 and works with AirPlay, in-line headphone remotes, VoiceOver, Control Center, 3D Touch, iTunes Match, and Apple Music that has been added to your collection. You can use Picky exclusively or seamlessly switch between it and the system Music app.

Picky: for listeners with refined taste.

What's New in Version 2.11

‣ Want to see every one of your albums grouped by artist? The main Albums list has a new sorting option for that.

‣ The main Songs list can now be sorted by playback duration, just like the Albums list.

‣ Speaking of Songs, now that list (and each artist’s songs list) show track times.

‣ For all you iPhone 7 and 7 Plus people out there: I’ve sprinkled even more haptic feedback throughout the app!

‣ Have you tried Picky’s dark theme? Well, with new list separators and blank album artwork it’s now even darker!

‣ I finally tracked down and fixed that bug where Picky could lose track of what you had previously been listening to. It’s a holiday miracle!

So, I’ve got some really big plans for Picky 3.0, and if you’re interested in following along I’ll be writing about them on my blog at And, as always, I really appreciate all your feedback, whether it be an email or a review :).

Happy holidays everyone!

Excellent replacement for Apple Music

Jan 10, 2016--this app seems to be more problematic as each new version comes out. Now it seems to be stuck in a endless repeat all loop. The developer has been responsive but puts the blame on the Apple Music app. All his suggestions have failed to fix the problem. I gave up on Picky and purchased Cesium which is very similar but without the repeat all bugs--which makes me highly question that the issue is with Apple Music.

May 9, 2016--downgrading my review to 2stars or less. The app just stopped working today. No changes on my end. What a hassle and shame.

After getting a new IPhone SE, I almost gagged on how terrible the Music app has gotten. Picky quickly fixed that. Worth it for iPhone. The filter for only showing artists with a configurable number of tracks is brilliant.

-Bottom menu should be customizable including audiobooks.
-Needs search box.
-Having an iPad version that costs more money is cheesy. This is a music player, c'mon.

A fine app, highly recommended.

A simple interface to iOS music

I was very unhappy with iOS 10 music player. Downloaded this an hour ago and it precisely fills my needs.

The app loaded up the music on my phone and presents it by artist, album, and most importantly for me by iTunes playlist.

No songs from the cloud! No cumbersome and confusing interfaces. No reference to Apple Music!
