MADE FOR PROFESSIONALS
From the outset, Pixaki has been designed with professionals in mind. The app itself is a piece of art, with a gorgeous gallery displaying your creations. Creating pixel art with Pixaki’s touch controls is every bit as precise as on a desktop, but feels more natural and intuitive. Built exclusively for iPad, the app is easy to use, but has the power to create anything from retro game characters to vast isometric cityscapes, with support for canvas sizes up to 512x512.

COLOR REINVENTED
Pixaki reinvents color selection for touch, with its unique hue picker that lets you accurately select the color you want from an infinitely scrolling spectrum. Work with a full range of 16 million colors, or create your own palette for each piece of art. You start each new artwork with a gorgeous 16 color palette, derived from the muted tones of the Commodore 64.

LAYER UP
Take the same workflow you use on the desktop to the iPad with layers. Create, duplicate, reorder and merge layers in Pixaki, with support for up to 20 simultaneous layers for each artwork.

COPY & PASTE
Select an area on your canvas, move it around, cut it, copy it and paste it, both within the app and outside to other apps. You can copy and paste entire layers too. Not only that, but you can copy an image from any other app, like Safari, Photos, Mail or Pages, and paste it into your artwork as a new layer.

ZOOM WITH EASE
Get in close to your art like never before with 400x zoom. Use two fingers to pinch in and pan around smoothly, without breaking your creative flow. And as you zoom, a grid automatically appears allowing you to place every pixel with precision.

SHARE ANYWHERE
Sharing is built in to the app, just as you’d expect. Send your artwork to your photo library, via email, via Messages, to Twitter, and to Facebook. Pixaki gives you the option to scale up your artwork using a nearest neighbour scaling algorithm so that you can be certain that wherever you artwork goes it will look as great as you intended. You can also email your artwork as a .pixaki file so that you can collaborate with other Pixaki users.

PSD EXPORT
Export all of the layers from your artwork, including opacity levels to a PSD file that can be opened in a number of desktop apps. With the Dropbox app installed on your iPad, you can easily upload your files to Dropbox to continue working on them from your computer.

Customer Reviews

Absolutely Enjoyable.

The entire design of Pixaki is absolutely enjoyable. Easy to pick up for beginners and pros alike to draw on canvas sizes of 16x16 up to iPad mini. There's retro style templates that allow you to pick old style consoles like SNES and Gameboy resolutions. Pixaki has some great features like layers, which allow you to draw a face on one, hair on one and clothes on the other etc. for editing separate elements of your design. Layers also has options like merge, duplicate, copy and paste. The pixel brush has brush sizing that allows for down to the pixel precision on up to bigger scale for quickly painting larger areas. It also has a custom color wheel to mix new colors or input hex codes for precise colors. Finally, exporting has three options: .Pixaki to share and collaborate with others, .PSD for Photoshop including your layers and .PNG for saving higher resolutions (with transparency) using the magnify option for, what I like to use for making custom wallpapers. All in all a great pixel creation app. Worth getting.

Polished app, but should do things everyone else doesn't

I've been using Photoshop professionally for over 20 years. Not for pixel art, but I know my way around digital imaging and image creation apps. This is my first time trying a dedicated pixel art app. I'll be clear... Pixaki is a very good app. Stable, clean interfaces. Highly usable. But is this really the best pixel art app we have these days? It really covers only the basics: paint, fill, eyedropper, and erase tools, color palette, and layers. From the "best" pixel art app I expect workflows I can't get anywhere else, one that solves problems that no one else is solving. Literally everything I can do in Pixaki, I can do in every other painting app I own. Four stars because it works and is a pleasant, polished app.

Excellent Pixel Art Making app, but...

It could use a few tools, however. I would like to make this my main pixel art creation app, but it needs a few more things to make it the best:

1.) The ability to duplicate whole projects. Right now, if you wish to have another copy of a particular project, you must copy it manually, frame by frame, and create new projects, which can be time consuming. If you load one particular project down with too many frames, it can corrupt and become laggy. So this creates a need for duplicating the project (as it is in many art apps) to make it easier.

2.) Automatic Line and shape (ie. circle or rectangle) would be nice. The brush paints at a certain speed, and there is no option to alter that.

Beyond these things, it's pretty stable and awesome for making pixel art.
