PlaceTagger is an easy to use app that geotags pictures taken on your digital camera.  Just sync, shoot, tag.  PlaceTagger records location data while maximizing battery life and uses iCloud to sync location data to your iPad and Mac (sold separately on the Mac App Store).  PlaceTagger has been featured by TUAW ( and Macworld (

Version 2.0 brings geotagging to the iPad.  You can record location data on your iPhone or cell-enabled iPad, then use Apple's Camera Connection kit to geotag JPG files right on your iPad!

Need to tag more file formats? Check out PlaceTagger for Mac (sold separately on the Mac App Store) to geotag most popular image formats including your DSLR's RAW image files!  PlaceTagger for OS X also allows you to adjust timestamps on your photos in case you forget to synchronize your camera and iPhone clocks.

PlaceTagger also lets you export to GPX track files so you can geotag using your favorite software to geotag (e.g. Aperture 3 or other software that supports geotagging via GPX tracks).  And version 2.0 also supports recording in the background*.

PlaceTagger also contains in-app step-by-step help and FAQ.

+ All new interface
+ iCloud sync for location data
+ Can Automatically save GPX files to Dropbox
+ Improved recording precision
+ Shows track on map
+ iPad geotagging support (use Apple's Camera Connection Kit)
+ iPad recording support (only on cell-enabled iPads)
+ Optimized for Retina iPad
+ Optional Mac app for geotagging, also with iCloud support (sold separately on Mac App Store)
+ GPX track export for geotagging with your favorite application

IMPORTANT: While PlaceTagger 2.0 is a free upgrade for PlaceTagger 1.0 users, it requires iOS 5 and is not compatible with version 1.0 as it's been rewritten from the ground up to take advantage of iCloud.  This includes PlaceTagger 1.0 and PlaceTagger for Aperture 1.0.  Version 2.0 will not migrate location data from version 1.0.

* Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. We highly recommend running PlaceTagger in the foreground and covering the proximity sensor on the front of the device while recording (e.g. put your phone in your pocket), which will shut off the screen and extend battery life.

What's New in Version 2.1.0

+ Automatically save GPX file to Dropbox after recording. You can import them using PlaceTagger for OS X.

+ Option to turn off iCloud

Do you like to Gamble?

When I first started using this application, it worked well and looked like it was going to be my silver bullet. I had used it a few times for a few short trips and tagged successfully.

Then one holiday, I captured about 5 days worth of points. When I returned, it was now time to either export through any of the methods provided. To this day, every time I go to the export screen, it first tells me it's downloading data from iCloud, then proceeds to crash.

I have logged calls and sent mails to the developer, with not even a word back. To this day I can no longer use this application because even trying to get it to log causes the application to give the above message and ..... Crash

I've reloaded the app, used different devices, iPhone 4S, 4, 5, iPad. Same problem with each. And while I would guess the problem lies with its iCloud storage, the gamble is, do you possibly want an entire holiday worth of geo data to disappear and possibly your $9.99 application to stop working?

Not very dependable

I tried this app again because I hoped the Dropbox support would work better than the iCloud support. Which should be easy as the iCloud support never worked for me. I guess working occasionally is better than nothing, but I would not depend on this app if the GPS data is important to you.

In my usage I found that if the app continued to run until the point you ended the session it did save the data to dropbox. However most of the time this app seemed to either crash, or just stop recording GPS data in the background. When it did this it did not save the GPX file to dropbox. But the bigger problem was that the app would just stop recording, so I ended up needing to check on it every few minutes to see if it was still working, and if not to restart it.
