Description

Plant-O-Matic generates a list of local plant species for any location in the Americas. Use high resolution photos, detailed text descriptions, and a variety of filters to identify and learn about plants.

The app includes over 88,000 species, the largest database of its kind.

Details:
BIEN Plant-O-Matic provides a list of species for any location in North and South America at 100 sq. km resolution based on 3,585,449 standardized plant observations and geographic range models.

The BIEN data represents a comprehensive effort to merge data from the world’s herbaria and ecological studies. Some geographic areas are better represented than others. While efforts were made to remove them, known issues include presence of cultivated species and over-prediction of some species geographic ranges. The app is intended as a general reference to discover the botanical diversity that likely exists around you; all data is provided “as is,” BIEN, Ocotea Technologies and their affiliates take no responsibility for the accuracy of the output. Additional details regarding the data, analysis, and other botanical tools can be found at http://bien.nceas.ucsb.edu/bien/.

Note: If you are using Plant-O-Matic outside of the Americas, your results will automatically be populated using Tuscon, AZ unless you select another location.

Plant-O-Matic is supported by the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, U.S. National Science Foundation, University of California, Santa Barbara, the State of California, iPlant Collaborative, Aspen Center for Environmental Studies and the University of Arizona College of Science. Ratings and Reviews

Too basic

SoullessFish

It has the basic information there, but there are not pictures for when searching which makes it a bit of a goose chase to find the plant. It also requires you're location at all times, so could very well be useless when hiking in the mountains.

Must-have for plant enthusiasts!

This app covers a staggering breadth of plant diversity in the Americas. It's probably going to be most useful as a checklist of possibilities for people who know a bit about what they might be seeing but don't know names of species they should consider. For example, if you know enough about plants to narrow your list to family, this is going to be a lot more useful than if you are starting with just flower color or growth form. I hope they continue to update this app as they update the underlying dataset.

Finally, it works great on my iPad mini even though it says phone only.

Needs a little more work to make finding plants easier

Jrojai

It's nice that it filters ants based on your location. However pictures of the plants are often of dried leaves which have lost their original colors. Need pictures of live plants to be able to better match those in the wild. Also if you don't already know the name or family of the plant you have do a lot of searching....
