Breakthrough DTS Play-Fi(R) technology powers simple, great-sounding whole-home wireless audio systems for smartphones and tablets. You can stream your favorite tunes over Wi-Fi right from the Play-Fi app to speakers from DTS Play-Fi product partners. It's a huge step up from Bluetooth - the audio quality and reliability are outstanding, and you can enjoy music from your phone in one room, or all your rooms.

The "Hi-Fi over Wi-Fi" listening experience is just a touch away, thanks to this handy app. Choose a speaker, choose a song, and your favorite tunes are streaming all through the house.

The app offers built-in streaming options: stream from worldwide music services; use AM/FM and Internet radio, connect to DLNA servers, or play anything from your device's music library, including your iTunes playlists. The app automatically organizes and indexes the music for you.

The app also handles set-up for your speakers, and gives you full control of volume and speaker selection. Choose one, set up speaker groups, or stream to all of them at once. Manage speaker groups for Spotify Connect, too.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have a Play-Fi product from Polk Audio, Definitive Technology or Phorus, please search for and download the custom Play-Fi app for your audio brand.

Please also note that the Play-Fi app is companion software to audio products enabled with Play-Fi technology. It is not intended as a stand-alone audio player.

Ratings and Reviews

I upgraded sound bars just to have Play Fi so I wouldn't have to turn on all of my home theater components to AirPlay. Initially it worked fine. Now updates repeatedly fail and it takes hours to do simple firmware upgrades. It also shows multiple instances of the same sound bar so when I try to play music it shows its playing yet you hear no audio or you get errors that the sound bar is being controlled by another user. There's no easy way (that I've found at least) to delete either one or both instances of the sound bar so now I'm back where I started except I actually paid specifically to ugprade my sound bar to have a feature that no longer works. And herein lies the problem with technology - instead of manufacturer's implementing AirPlay, they had to go and reinvent the wheel with DTS and when it doesn't work - you're at the mercy of DTS to make things work because the manufacturer's are going to point the finger at DTS and DTS the manufacturers. Extremely frustrating.

Worst update so far

I've generally been very happy with the play-fi app and speakers until this latest app update. First of all I kept having issues with the app not being able to update all my speakers. I probably spent a couple hours trying over and over to get the updates to complete... until you do so the app won't let you use the non updated speakers. Now that they are all successfully updated I'm having trouble connecting to the speakers. Sometimes it works other times it just times out trying to connect to them. It's very frustrating to have an app and speakers that worked, suddenly not work. Each time I want to play music on a speaker I'm spending more time that's it's worth to get it to connect.

Hopefully DTS will send another update through to fix this.

Developer Response

Update has definitely been top of mind for us. In this latest push, we've done some improvements to our speaker update process to make it more reliable, and it should also be about two times faster. If you have multiple speakers, they'll update simultaneously too. Give it a try and let us know.

Gettng better

Still a bit glitchy but with fewer handshake issues than before. I still cannot believe that they have not yet incorporated an alarm clock or a sleep timer. I have had some media server issues. I wish the app would store in memory the list of media contained on the server, because the directory takes too long to load. Overall, it is acceptable for me and I plan to continue to use it.

If anyone at Play-Fi is reading this, check out the alarm clock and sleep timer functions in the WABE Atlanta app for a guide on how to incorporate these functions properly.
