What's New in Version 3.5.2
- Fixed crash on iPad 1 and other iOS 5 devices.
Great but needs AirPlay
When I first got my iPad I was using AirVideo to stream movies from my Linux machine. On my TouchPad however, a virtually obsolete device at this point, I could mount an ordinary Samba share and play pretty much any video directly without conversion. Perhaps my computer doesn't have enough power to do decent conversion on the fly, because I had constant streaming issues with AirVideo.
With this, however, no conversion is necessary. It connected easily to my Linux machine running Samba and my MacBook. I'd like to give it five stars, but it was a real let down to discover that there was no AirPlay support. Fix that and this will be a five-star app. Luckily my TV can stream video on its own, but it would still be a nice feature.
I'm also not quite thrilled about the interface design. It just doesn't look very Apple or iOS like; I don't care some of the font choices, for example. One other gripe is that I think there should be an option to force it to open in landscape mode. I have my iPad locked in portrait mode and only use landscape for video. It's kind of annoying to have to unlock it and then rotate it. This is when feature AirVideo had that was nice.
But overall, it's very nice. Too bad it took me nearly three years to find it.
No Dropbox Connection, No Native AirPlay
I bought the full add-on package, but when I try to link the app with DropBox, this is the error > "Only a limited set of users can receive tokens while this app is in development mode." No 5-star rating is possible without DropBox support.
Turn to next option: network shared drive ($). You must enable Windows (SMB). [System preferences > file sharing > options] Once you do this, the app should find your Mac automatically.
Finally, WiFi transfer (new AirportExtreme, iPad3, rMBP) is much slower than USB/Lightning/iTunes. You can do it, but it's a serious pain. Not recommended.
No native AirPlay support. To use AirPlay, you must mirror from the home screen media controls ("swipe up").
Plays MKV and FLV files. I had one MKV play without a hitch; second (slightly larger, 1.7GB) had obvious visual stutter (low framerate) when on AirPlay > TV but looked fine on iPad. I used Wondershare Video Converter Pro to turn the MKV into an MP4.
Perfect Everything Player
I have been searching for a while for a player that plays all the stuff like wmv, mkv, ogm, flv, etc. I use to use airav which got removed, then ace player. They play like player xtreme but often lags or do not play at all. Air av is very choppy at time just like vlc on PC/Mac. Nothing phases player extreme. I like that it organize and the buttons all work. Very customizable with the allowing functions within the player to fully mimic the iPads original functionality. Hands down the best player that allows me to enjoy all and any entertainment or file storage system that gets passed Apple system to prevent you from using the iPad as a USB drive. It just works!
