What's New in Version 6.1

As four Australian guys in colourful shirts once said: I'll take you driving in my car, car, oh I'll take you driving, oh I'll...yeah ok it works better in song form. CarPlay support is here! You've been asking for it and we've been working hard to bring it to you. Browse your podcasts and filters to find the perfect podcast, then control playback easily all from your fancy new car stereo. For those of you without fancy new car stereos, now is the time to convince your significant other that your car is about to fall apart and for the good of the planet, the economy and the country, it's time to buy a new car with CarPlay support. Pocket Casts said so, and we can't let them down!

If the above plan fails, then there's always plan B: buy an iPad instead. We've added grid sorting and unread badges to the iPad version for those that want their podcast grids to look _just so_.

Of course, there's lots of bug fixes and minor enhancements as well in this release that would honestly take me too long to list. So why on earth are you still reading this change log, go find some podcasts to listen to!

Nice, new design for iPhone - but iPad is a step back

Since the 6.0 update, the iPad version of the app no longer shows the number of podcasts in a particular category or filter. For example, "Unplayed," "Downloaded," "Downloading," etc. have no numbers associated with those categories. It's like opening a book to the Table of Contents and seeing no page numbers. In the iPhone version, those useful numbers still appear, just like they did before this major update. REVIEW UPDATE: Not resolved with version 6.1.

Also a significant problem with the iPad app is that on the podcast tiles page you cannot access settings to change sort or tile size or set badge. REVIEW UPDATE: This settings issue was resolved with the release of version 6.1. Thank you for being so responsive. Great developers!

I have no complaint about update infrequency because actually the version prior to 6.0 worked flawlessly with no apparent bugs. Still my number one app.

Lacks playlist function

The July 2016 update removed the playlist function, an absolutely essential function, from the iOS version of the app. To the best of my knowledge, EVERY other podcast app has a playlist function -- for good reason. Without it, there is no way to prioritize downloaded podcast episodes and to set the precise order in which to listen to them. As such, this app is now useless to me, even though I would give it five stars if the playlist function were restored.

I suspect that the playlist function was eliminated because of problems synchonizing playlists across devices. Previous versions of Pocket Casts did not adequately address situations where different devices gave conflicting instructions on how to order a playlist. Nevertheless, this does not justify eliminating the playlist function entirely. At the very least, the playlist function could be retained by making each playlist "local" to a device, without the ability to synchronize playlists across devices.

Can't shut off; hard to sort. I'm done.

Pocket Casts is more frustrating the longer I use it. It continues to turn on randomly, which is a real drag. This is been happening for several months (and I've let the developers know).

It's very hard to sort the "Up Next" list, and the layout & usability just need re-vamping. It really takes too much effort to use this app.

The "add to next" is just above the "play off from here", which is a design disaster that they should get a clue about. How many times do people accidentally put their finger on "play off from here" and delete their playlist? At the very least it should be a user option to configure.

Previously I could tap on my Bluetooth headset repeatedly to skip to the next podcast – this feature has been removed in the last two updates (I have checked with several Bluetooth headsets).

I just again lost my whole "Up Next" queue, for the umpteenth time, inexplicably.

I have a brand-new 6S, in prime condition, and I really don't have any of these kind of problems with other apps. Casts is just too frustrating, and the developers don't seem to care. I'm tired of waiting – the problems just multiply.

To top it all off, their update changelog text is cutesy stupidity that tells you nothing – because they make no real improvements.
