The most garbage news app you'll ever put up with
I open this app multiple times a day, every day, and I'm sorry to say it is complete garbage.
I don't have to tell you the content is good. Of course it's good. You know it's good and that's why you'd download it and (maybe) tolerate it, despite innumerable technical flaws.
Just getting the thing open can be a headache. Often you'll just see the logo and a black screen. Sometimes you'll boot it up, and photos from the main page will be missing.
Once in the app, you tap on a story in the top news... but oops, you swiped left accidentally and now you're looking at another story in the top news list. No problem. You'll just swipe right again and get back to where you are, right? Nope. That takes you to a completely different story. You'll have to exit out and go find that story again.
Rotate your phone and go to landscape view, then turn it back the way it was, and you'll find you've totally lost your place also.
Push alerts are nice, sorta. Usually they come in the form of a lede sentence that's cut short. Wanting to see details, I often tap on one and it just opens the app without giving me any details.
Politico is the most up to date, most thorough source of information on what's happening in the beltway, and I'm glad to have it in my pocket, but this app needs to be rebuilt from the start. Politico-- you need to start taking this seriously.
Content Great! Terrible App?!
As others have noted, this app gets "stuck" and will not update content (even if you swipe down to update). This has been an ongoing problem with this app for months (maybe years?). I'm not sure why they haven't fixed this annoying bug. Another related annoyance is when you open the app it reloads at your last update (which takes time if few bars of cell signal). If you last opened three days ago you have to wait for it to load 3-day old headlines first. Kinda weird. That said, I do believe politico provides very solid center-left journalism. Since this is free I feel a bit ashamed for complaining about the quality of this thing I have not paid for.
Push notifications are near useless
Content of the app is great and well presented. However, push notifications of breaking news stories are... broken. The notification has just a teaser or half of a complete headline. When you tap on it and the app opens almost never is the full story available to view even after refreshing app content. "BREAKING NEWS: Congressman indicted. Allies of Rep..." is a tease and frustrating that the app doesn't yet have the story. It's been a problem since they introduced notifications. Hope they fix it.
