Update post iOS 10 - doesn't work at all.

Update: Another downgrade. I am whisked to an unwanted ad more and more. When I try to get back to the radio stream, it is frozen. I have to close out the app and reopen it to resume listening.

Update: This is a downgrade from my previous four stars. I echo the frustration of those who have found the app unstable, and I refuse to listen to stations that make me listen to promotional material prior to the radio stream. A new problem that has been particularly irritating is the ad bar at the bottom of the screen. I am very tired of accidentally touching the bar and being taken to an ad for Game of War or other product (many of which seem incongruous for public radio listeners).

I have loved having public radio available on my phone, and I downloaded this version because I was interested in the sleep and alarm features. I originally downgraded this app because it seemed less reliable than the previous version, and I had trouble with the new features. I am still not impressed with the alarm, but otherwise I have had a good experience overall. Being able to listen to public radio stations across the country is great.

Ads, Ads, and more Ads

Using the public radio app is frustrating as it increases the volume of advertisements you must endure to listen to content. For example, if you launch the app at the top of the hour, you have to listen to multiple ads before you begin hearing the top of the hour new which means you miss the top story. And, the ads are above and beyond the already high advert load (including all the repeated house ads each hour). And if that isn't bad enough, there is an "ad trap" on the bottom of the iOS screen within this app and so if you tap instead of swiping by accident when trying to bring up the iOS control panel, guess what happens? Yep, it launches some full page ads and cuts the audio to public radio and plays the ad audio. And to put icing on the cake, when you exit the ad and relaunch this application, you go through the whole forced ad process all over again and it causes me to regularly miss content I was in the middle of listening to.

Hope this helps, I'm going to use an FM radio instead 😄

Unreliable x2

When it works, it is a most valuable access point for numerous great sources, but I concur with the other recent reviews which indicate this app is not reliable and unable to fix itself once it fails. It times out regularly but the pauses have become longer and longer. And it hangs up as well. I have often had to shut down my iphone to remedy a long, often day long hang up where the app is completely unresponsive to any prompts and, I assume, drains the phone battery as the searching or buffering time icon spins--to which the only cure is to completely shut down the handset. This app could be 5 stars but languishes at 2 until someone invests in a fix. Note: I realize this is "free" so possibly that could be used as a justification for lower expectations but I hate that kind of thinking. If there was an improved version that worked, I'd buy it and pay as much or more than others apps for which I have paid.
