Quiztones is a frequency ear training app for amateur and professional audio engineers, producers, and musicians. Quiztones uses tones and frequency-altered noise and musical loops (including source material from your own music library) to train your ears and help develop more acute listening and frequency recognition skills.

Quiztones will...

• Sharpen your ears & frequency recognition skills
• Improve your mixing and EQ chops
• Prevent noise and frequency buildup in your mixes & recordings
• Eliminate the need to sweep for frequencies

Quiztones cleverly uses quizzes to engage users in training exercises. Track your progress with the built-in score log.

Each EQ quiz includes four trainers:

• Easy frequency boost (+10 dB)
• Hard frequency boost (+5 dB)
• Hard frequency cut (-10 dB)
• Expert frequency boost (+5dB – 1/3 octave)

New in 1.1: Train your ears to identify boost & cut between 1-16dB with our new Gain Level Comparison quizzes!

Quizzes included in 1.1:

• iTunes/Music Library
• Tones
• Pink Noise
• Piano
• Drums
• Strings
• Strings 2
• Orchestra
• Electric Bass
• Upright Bass
• Female Vocals
• Electric Guitar
• Acoustic Guitar

"Turns out, this app offers everything offered in that Berklee class of mine… in an app!"

- Damian Erskine, No Treble

The Quiztones app is far and away the best app I've purchased. It's an incredible tool for all audio engineers and musicians ... My mixing has improved by leaps and bounds after just a few weeks with Quiztones.

- Austin McAllister

"As a professional audio engineer my most prized tool is my ears. Developing this acute sense of understanding can take years of development. With Quiztones, both aspiring and professional engineers alike can now develop and sharpen the skill(s) of 'truly musical hearing' while on-the-go. Quiztones is both fun and educational, merging the two into an addictive and beneficial mobile app."

- Edward J "UK" Nixon (Audio Engineer for Grammy Award winning J.U.S.T.I.C.E League)

A professional Audio Engineer of 10 years, I've come across many ear training devices, blind tests, and software. This app is TOPS! Highly recommended! The developers are serious about what they do. You will not be disappointed!

Customer Reviews

This app has proven a great resource. The hardest part of mixing for me is identifying tones I want to change by applying EQ in some way. I finally feel like I can start to hone in more easily, and undoubtedly, with some more training, I will hear what I should be hearing more quickly. That will take (and has already taken to some degree) a lot of guesswork and trial and erorr out of the process. I highly recommend this app to anyone working in audio.

Still a major flaw...

The new version did not fix a major flaw that was present in the last version. When doing the EQ quizzes with your own music, due to the level of modern mastering, applying any boost to a track that is already peaking at 0 dBFS will cause clipping.

There should at least be some form of internal compensation in the app, for example: if the EQ quiz you’re attempting is going to be using an 8 dB boost, reduce the track level by 8 dB to give yourself headroom to actually be able to boost some frequency by 8 dB. Otherwise, it’s just going to distort, especially at low freqeuncies. This happens regardless of the level from the computer itself.

I feel that doing the EQ quizzes with your own music is most beneficial because it lets you hear EQ changes in a context in which you are already familiar. However, this is very difficult with this app because of the clipping/distortion that occurs.

Essential App for Recordists & Producers

If you record & mix music or use an EQ you need this app. Compentant knowledge of frequencies allows you to quickly make decisions that will benefit your recording or mix. Before Quiztones you either had to pay hundres of dollars for a set of CDs or spend hours fiddling with your EQ. With Quiztones you quickly and easily dial up quizzes on the most common instruments used in contemporary music. Or, choose a track from your own library. The GUI is easy on the eyes, obvious to the user, and simple. Other ear training apps can bog you down in options before you're up and running. $20 is dinner, I know, but it will be a worthwhile investment. The iPhone is app is awesome, too.
