Description

Radio Public narrows what you could hear to what you should. Whether you are new to podcasts and not sure where to start, or a long-time listener with dozens of existing subscriptions, Radio Public can help.

There are 250,000 podcasts and more than 15 million episodes. Over a billion minutes of entertainment, education and information. Nearly infinite choice. Seems great right?

But it's also overwhelming and frustrating.

* Which of the millions of episodes should I hear?
* Will this episode be a waste of my time and attention?
* Are there new episodes available from shows I follow?

*** Not sure where to start? ***
Try our handcrafted playlists, each episode thoughtfully picked by people who love podcasts. You’ll find playlists like: “Start here”, “Perfect for your commute” and “The best of 2016”. Our playlists are a great way to sample shows like This American Life, Stuff You Should Know, Serial and Another Round from networks like Radiotopia, Gimlet, PRX, Panoply, NPR and Wondery. Spend less time browsing through long lists of categories and topics and more time listening to great stuff.

*** Humans for the win! ***
Looking for a more personal, concierge level recommendation? Our Radio Public podcast librarians (yes, real people) have deep knowledge about podcasts and want to help you with a personal suggestion. We love helping people find the perfect show or episode. Tell us a little about the books, TV shows and movies you love and we’ll get to work.

*** Just listen. ***
Tap play, start listening and Radio Public starts a personalized, never ending stream of episodes. Want more control over what you hear? The shows and playlists you follow are prioritized over our picks. So if a new episode from your favorite show comes out, we’ll make sure you hear that over something we picked for you.

*** Know exactly what you want? ***
Search for a show, follow it and episodes will start to appear in your suggestions and stream of episodes. Already listen in an other podcast app? Import your existing subscriptions from apps like Apple Podcast, Overcast and Pocket Casts. Radio Public also supports private premium podcast subscriptions like those you might get from a podcaster using Patreon."

What's New in Version 1.6.2

Populus, is the plant genus which includes most poplars, as well as aspen and cottonwood. So says Wikipedia. Popular podcasts are not trees. Duh, they are shows a bunch of people have decided they enjoy. You can easily sample these shows loved by the masses by tapping on the search icon, it's the magnifying glass tucked up in the right corner on the home and explore screens. Learn more about these not so hidden gems by tapping on the artwork or podcast name. Did just the show name and snazzy artwork tickle your fancy? Quickly follow the show by tapping the + icon and you'll get updates when new episodes are published. [Insert joke about populism, popular votes and popcorn here].

Just a little while ago we introduced Smart Folders to help you collect and organize your podcasts. They've been super useful for people to group podcasts into personal collections. Lump all your science shows into one, gather all your comedy into another. I have one for shows that help me get back to sleep when I wake up at 3am "Go the f back to sleep". Creating a Smart Folder was tucked away, deep in the settings - now you'll see a prompt on the home screen to help you get started. Woo! What creative name have you given your Smart Folders? Let me know @radiopublic on Twitter.

You've created that snazzy new Smart Folder. Where is it? It'll get added to your home screen and now, you can drill down into the folder just like you can with the shows you follow to see individual episodes and use all the filters and sorting stuff to set the view up how you want. Just tap the name of your Smart Folder or tap > and you'll see that list.

Phew! One more thing… now when you are peeking at a new podcast, checking it out, reading the description, you'll see a recommended episode to start with. Because sometimes when a podcast has 500 episodes a little suggestion on where to start isn't a bad idea. Not in the mood for that episode? Tap the episodes tab on the podcast page and you'll see the full list.

Coolio. Have feedback about what we've been building? I'd love to hear from you. This might be a slightly crazy thing to have done, but I put my personal cell phone number in the settings. Give me a call. Seriously, if you've gotten this far in the update notes I'm sure we'd have a great conversation.

btw, traveling to PEI just isn't the same since the bridge was put in.

UPDATE: app continues to improve, good discovery, sparse player

UPDATE: I have given the app another try as suggested by the developer, and I have noticed that updates since my original review have indeed addressed many of the problems I originally stated. The app now seems to have much improved podcast discovery, but the actual player view is sparse at best. It doesn't seem to support podcast chapter markers, just containing brief podcast descriptions on a white background. This is definitely now a useable podcast app, but for now I will probably continue using overcast. I did however find a new podcast I may enjoy, so this app is good for discovering new podcasts. If the app continues improving at this rate, it will probably be great in the near future! I'll probably check on it occasionally and update my review and may potentially adopt it as my main podcast player in a future update.

ORIGINAL REVIEW titled: Confusing UI, doesn't have key podcasts: The user interface is confusing with some buttons seeming to do nothing, and others having non-intuitive functions (e.g. Settings button only brings up a dialog to import podcasts, I can't find a way to access any other settings whatsoever), and it doesn't have some of the main podcasts I listen to (e.g. ATP (accidental tech podcast)) (I know I can import it manually, however I should not have to when my other podcast apps all do so automatically). It also lacks many interest categories other apps have, like technology. There are no obvious advantage over alternative podcast apps, I'm back to using overcast.
