Major Connectivity Issues | App Works Well
First the good. Once installed and connected, app has worked quite well for me. Use an iPhone X, no crash issues. Looks like this may replace my wireless wifi Tappecue.
Now the not so good, coming from someone with a solid IT background. If you are not comfortable with computers or changing administrator settings on routers, would suggest avoiding this product. Took me about four hours to set it up.
If you have one of the new Comcast routers, you will need to log into the administrator screen and rename the 5 megahertz band temporarily, go through the setup on the 2.4 megahertz band, then change the 5 megahertz band back to the original name.
I use a VPN (out of the country very frequently) and was not able to complete the setup until I disabled my VPN and used my actual IP address. Found out that when I re-enabled the VPN on my phone, my device was shown as off line in the app. So if you are running a VPN, head’s-up.
Now that I have figured this out, happy with the product. But lots of folks are going to need a lot of help to get the app working. Brandon at RecTec was very helpful.
While I understand why RecTec chose to lock into the 2.4 band, I think it probably creates more problems than it resolves. Much easier to install a booster, if needed, than unbundle band widths. And I have never experienced VPN connectivity issues with other smart devices.
This app makes it much easier to monitor my grill. Beyond that it needs some serious improvement. When first using this app it looks more like a social media shopping platform with a pop up. The controls should be the first screen when opening the app, not pictures from social media sites. The recipes section is setup more like your shopping. It should list recipes with feedback and option to save them with notes. Also be able to save your recipes. The control section has alarm options, but they actually do nothing to help. I set the alarms and when triggered nothing happens on my phone till I open the app go to the control section and wait for it refresh. Then all it does is have a banner open and phone vibrates. That is not an alarm, It should act like any other alarm on your phone. A temp monitor widget would also be a nice option.
My Traeger now has WiFi
This Black Friday, Rectec was rubbing a $99 deal on their WiFi controller. I saw a lot of people were dropping them into their traegers (and other pellet grills). Many utilized Rectec's $15 harness that they slightly modified using spade connectors.
Anyway, the traeger is a dream now and I can check pit and meat temps from anywhere.
You DO need a unique name for your 2.4ghz network, but Rectec tells you this both in the paperwork they sent me as well as on their pdf instructions.
They also allow you to calibrate the thermometer which was incredibly handy for the traeger, which was reading about 40 degrees too high when set to 350 (per their instructions). It now reads dead on with two separate thermometer that I tested.
I highly recommend this controller. I can't speak to their smokers, but I've heard lots of good things there too. Surprised the app doesn't overall get better love. I see connectivity it a gripe for some. Get that 2.4ghz band renamed. This is good practice in general as sometimes this is a requirement for various other WiFi enabled products.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
