What is the Examen?
St. Ignatius of Loyola created the Examen to be a very short prayer that can be prayed at any time. In the Examen, we review our recent past to find God and his blessings in our daily life. Ignatius would say that the Examen should be the most important moment of our day, because this moment affects every other moment.
How Do I Pray the Examen?
There are five simple steps to the Examen, which this app leads you through:
1. Relish the moments that went well and all of the gifts you have today.
2. Request that the Spirit lead you through your review of the day.
3. Review your day.
4. Repent of any mistakes or failures.
5. Resolve, in concrete ways, to live tomorrow well.
This version (1.22) contains updated audio settings and enhanced display for iOS 11.
Ratings and Reviews
I love this app! I stumbled upon it totally by accident when I did a Google search for the Examen steps. It’s now the only thing I’ll use for my examination of conscience. Whenever I’d do the Examen on my own I felt my spiritual wheels spinning - I kept focusing on the same points of gratitude and the same vague sins. The prompts in this app are so insightful that I often find myself in tears by the end and I feel spiritually stronger - or maybe more attuned is a better description. Praise God for this app, those who created it, and those who will use it.
This app is wonderful--Simple to use with many varieties to fit your mood or day. It helps keep me focused on the posts of the examen especially out in public where it is harder to pray (or when my mind is especially "frisky"). It's a button to push when the need to do something on my phone is there. I've even handed it to my teens on occasion when I could tell they were bored--they liked it! Thank you!
So lovely—and one frustration
I love this app, and include it in my weekly prayer rhythm. It's lovely, well designed, engaging, and really helps me to connect with God and grow as a Christian person. My frustration is a technical one: the app screen closes automatically and my iPhone locks after only a very short time, so I keep having to interrupt my prayer to put on a password! Other prayer apps are set to stay open while in use--this little design tweak would take it to 5 stars for sure.
