Reviews:

"Reiner Knizia's Ra app is beautifully done." - TUAW

"Ra is another brilliant 4.5 [out of 5] Dimple pleasure." - AppSmile.com

"[Ra] is very stunning and impressive! Keep up the good work!" - Reiner Knizia

Build an empire that will live forever. Collect tiles representing various aspects of Egyptian life and civilization while your rivals try to do the same. Wisely use the few tokens that Ra, the sun god, has given you to earn your place of honor in the Valley of the Kings.

Combining deep strategy with an intuitive and beautiful visual presentation, Ra captures the mysterious lure of Ancient Egypt and will bring you back for more time and time again. Choose your favorite of 8 different Egyptian gods as your avatar, and then discover the true power of the gods as you compete against them in solo play.

With no setup time required, no pieces to lose, and no arguments about the rules, the future of board games is here and Ra gives you exactly what you want -- to play!

How to play:

Tap the draw button to reveal a single tile. The player with the highest sun (token from Ra) begins. A player without tokens takes no action on their turn. When an epoch ends, players receive or lose fame points depending on the tiles they hold. The player with the most fame after three epochs is the winner.

Issues with randomization of tiles

The app looks nice and runs well. I haven't had any issues with crashing. However, there are a couple issues. First and most importantly, there is almost no way that the tiles come out in a truly random manner. There have been many games that I have played where the last 8-10 tiles to come out are all Ra tiles. In theory, this is a possibility but the fact that it has happened in Several games makes it apparent that there are issues with randomization. This has never happened to me when I have played on the table yet it seems to happen in 15-20% of the games on the app. This really ruins the game in many ways because it makes the last round largely pointless and annoying to sit through.

The second issue is that the AI can be a little slow making turns relative to other games I have played on my iPad. Even with the graphics on the fastest level, it is not particularly fast. This can be annoying - especially during the afore-mentioned scenario where you have to sit through 8-10 consecutive Ra tiles being drawn followed by a round of passing each time.

Horrible implementation

The graphics are so awful that I actually feel a little angry. Time was spent on adding distracting details (like "sand" that periodically races across the screen, or tiles that fly around in the background on the rules screen) instead of designing a simple and appealing interface. Some elements were stretched for iPhone 5 optimization, but others weren't, so now none of the spaces line up properly, which is confusing and distracting. (Hard to explain but very clear if you're looking at the board.) Almost all of the text is difficult to read because of poor font/color/style choices.

The menu doesn't seem to consistently store my selection of turning off game sounds.

I'm pretty bummed that I spent money on this. I hope they re-skin it and fix the bugs so that I can give it a better rating and enjoy playing. I've spent many hours playing other iOS strategy games like Stone Age, Puerto Rico, San Juan, Ticket to Ride, Catan, etc., and this is by far the worst. Spend your money elsewhere unless it gets a major makeover!

Good game, so-so implementation.

Ra is a very nice auction game, fun to play with other people and easy to pick up (as with most Knizia games, the hardest thing to grasp is the scoring). A couple of things bear mention, though. Most glaringly, there is no replay of opponent turns. I don't know why this feature is so rare, as I consider it essential. That's an automatic one star off, and I considered two but figured it would be unfair, as in pass and play this game is wonderful. The second thing is that on iPhone 5 and up, the presentation is totally screwed as noted in another review. I cannot believe this hasn't been fixed, but the game is still playable as is.
