A Mediocre Port of a Great PC Classic

When I found this app featured on the App Store front page, I was excited to learn that a port of Epic Pinball (as it was known on the PC for those who don't remember or weren't there, as Epic Games was the publisher back in the mid-90s).

Disappointingly, what I found was a port that somewhat resembled the PC game but plays nothing at all like it. The physics are all wrong, with the ball flopping deadpan on surfaces instead of having a little bounce like a true machine (and like Epic Pinball before it). The tables look correct, but the music isn't quite what I remembered it, nor the sounds. Animations are all wrong, as the PC version didn't just randomly warp the ball from the kickers, but actually gave a small delay so you knew which kicker the ball was appearing to next. And this port, so far as I can tell, lacks a nudge function that the PC original had.

These inconsistencies, coupled with flipper controls that are difficult to register (on the iPhone 5 at least), all add up to a product that had so very much potential, but ends up falling flat in almost every conceivable way. It isn't a "bad" game of pinball, but it is far and away from being excellent like its older PC sibling, which is disappointing for a classic PC gamer such as myself.

I don't get it . . . you might not either

OK. Free. I play one round of 10 balls. Good play, but a lot just zip down the middle. Still, OK. But . . . . then my option is to CONTINUE or BACK. At the Continue screen it asks for $.99 or higher level (more money) to buy more balls. What is free here? I try to go back but that is quit. So, I quit. Restart, and am back at the CONTINUE and pay $.99 for 10 more balls! I restart. OK, game is back. I play 10 more balls. Then guess what? (go to the top of this text and re-read). Yes, pay $.99!

I get that more screens or more tricks could be an in-app purchase, but . . . just to play? If there is a straight forward way to play I don't see it. I love pinball machines. This one just doesn't make it friendly. Or, their buttons are misleading and I made some error, or they are trying to get a buck for ten balls. For once and all, or each time?

Sorry, I'm deleting. I hope they make straight forward play work smoothly. Then offer some great in-app purchases to enhance the play. Be straight up about things. But me? I'm outta here . . . .

Good titles

I played these games on my computer when I was younger. They are the essentially the same now. For a while I didn't play these regularly. All I had was my old iPhone 3G which really was too small for the beauty of these types of games and when I did upgrade my phone I had forgotten about them. I now have an iPad mini & my iPhone 4s. Both devices play the pinball games well. $2.99 was a good price to pay for all of the tables in this pack. When I first purchased it for my PC in the '90s it was $5 each and I had to play in the computer room with a bulky headset on so I wouldn't disturb any one in the house. It was still fun then & playing now, even on my phone, brings back good memories. Very good game. Keep up the good work
