What a fantastic game! Don't be misled by the unusual name or simple retro graphics (as I almost was); there is a fantastic platformer under those 8-bit pixels. First off, the graphics look much better in action than in the pictures - there is an artistic elegance in the simple presentation. But more importantly, the controls and gameplay are superb. In terms of gameplay, this is unquestionably one of the best platformers the AppStore has to offer. It is challenging but fair, intuitive, fluid, and most importantly FUN. I don't know what the magic ingredient is here, but I just enjoy playing this game a surprising amount. The controls just work, and I never find myself frustrated with the virtual interface, which is a common issue with virtual controls. In addition to the great presentation and controls, this game has an excellent (if somewhat repetitive) soundtrack. "Rico" vastly exceeded my expectations, and I really hope to see more from this developer very soon.
This would be five stars if...
The loading times weren't so slow for this kind of game. You die in this game. A lot. Very, very often. As you should because it's challenging. But every time you die you have to wait about 2 to 3 seconds for the game start again. It starts to grate. If this can be improved you have a near perfect game (although I find myself stepping on mines a lot, too. I'm colorblind, so they look like regular grass to me. I have to memorize where they are. Just something to consider maybe fixing). Other than all that, this is a very well crafted, thoughtfully designed game. I'll look for more from this designer.
Good game, but fix those button locations!
This game is a lot of fun, but I'm not sure what the developer was thinking with the button placement. The four buttons, left, right, B, and A, for some reason are evenly distributed along the bottom of the screen, making it difficult to hit them without looking. Left and right should be closer to each other on the left side of the screen and B and A should be closer together on the right side. At the very least, give an option to manually set the button locations.
