Ripple Cruise Communicator
By Mobile Technology Innovations
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
NOTICE TO USERS: Carnival has recently blocked Ripple onboard some of its ships.
Ripple is the first and only app specifically designed to allow cruise ship passengers to communicate with one another! With Ripple, you can call, text, and video chat with friends and family onboard any wifi-enabled ship without additional charges!
Ripple never uses an internet connection, so it can be used in airplane mode and without a data package from the cruise line. Just turn on airplane mode, connect to the ship's wifi network, and it's smooth sailing from there.
- Voice calls: Join up to 3 calls per phone for an unlimited group size!
- Text messages: Instant text communications—literally.
- Video chat: Video chat with 1 friend using either the front or back camera.
- Sync your friends list with a friend with one tap!
- Works in the background.
- Ripple cannot be used to communicate with anyone not on the ship.
- Ripple works best when both airplane mode and WiFi are on.

Ripple Works on Royal
With Royal Caribbeans pervasive WiFi, I had no problem using Ripple Cruise Communicator. I had a little trouble initially setting it up but once I set my phone into airplane mode with the wifi turned on, I had to force Ripple to use the RoyalWiFi without Internet and then it worked. To prove to my travel companions that there was no charge to use it, nobody signed up for an account for an Internet package. I used one voice call that worked fine and the text messages were perfect as long as you left ripple running. Five stars when battery life is extended.
Update... It is now October 2015, and less than 30 days before I sail again on Freedom of the seas, and I'm not able to contact the app developers to confirm if the app is still being supported as nothing appears to have been updated since 2014. Excellent concept and great use of technology maybe someone will not let this app disappear.
Worked for 2 texts on Royal, then quit
Out family tried this. Some of us were able to add the others using the friend codes that Ripple assigns. 2 of us were able to text a couple of times then never again. I am not sure if it was blocked by Royal or not. It does need to run in the foreground at all times in order to use, according to the app. If all members of the family don’t have it running ( and draining battery) at all times, it won’t work. I’m not sure if it stopped working because we have screen locks after a certain number of minutes.
Just returned from a cruise this week and it worked great. Installed it on 3 phones and used for text messages and phones calls for the entire duration of the cruise with no issues
