** This app works OFF-LINE while you are touring. There is no need to have a network or wireless connection while you are driving.
Once downloaded, this tour REQUIRES NO DATA to operate and activate, so you won’t incur roaming or data charges. YOU DO NOT REQUIRE A CELLULAR NETWORK CONNECTION TO TOUR!! You will not incur any data roaming charges to use this tour, even if you are from outside the USA. Works Off-line and with Data Roaming turned OFF.
Professional tour guides have filled the guide with interesting and entertaining stories, loads of tips and advice on what to do and will point out places of interest as you approach them. There are 146 commentary points as we drive to Hana and then on to the National Park at Kipahulu. It’s just like driving around with a local expert.
Note that this tour does not have commentary on the "back side" of Haleakala. We do not provide commentary this way because most rental car companies do not allow their rentals cars to be taken on this route. So we provide all new commentary for the drive back from Hana to the Kahului Airport area.
Just download the app on Wi-Fi from your network at home, your resort or use any free Wi-Fi network. Because the app is filled with audio commentary and maps, its larger than "normal" apps. Many phone/data networks will block the download because of size - so its IMPORTANT to download over a Wi-Fi network.
This tour is not just a directory but a designed tour to follow, just like how a tour guide would take you. It’s simple and entertaining; just let GyPSy provide commentary automatically as you travel.
** iPad users - please note that WiFi-only iPads will not activate the commentary automatically. Any iPhone or network-capable iPad (WiFi + Cellular - whether you have a network connection or not) will work just fine.
++ Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life - we strongly recommend taking a car charger.

Can’t imagine doing Road to Hana without it
All the rave reviews made me choose to buy this app, and we were not disappointed. It was VERY helpful. We would have parked in several dangerous spots, or missed a great site to see, if it weren’t for this app. It would let us know ahead of time, that the parking was 100 yards PAST the waterfall or arboretum. That was critical information. We agree about it’s must see spots. We followed suggestions to start out before 8 (7:20 from Kihei), we hit the must sees and a few others that sounded interesting to us, went all the way to Haleakala for the pools at O’hei and the pipiwei Trail, and we got back to Kihei just after dark. Only improvement I would suggest to the developers is to let us zoom out on the map and select arrows to listen to further ahead if we want. Because the map kept updating, you could only zoom out for 1 sec, often not long enough to check out what you wanted to. It’s also unclear to me why the app shuts off every time you use another app. We didn’t realize it did this until we nearly missed one site. But even with those annoyances it’s a really really great app. Be sure to download it over wifi, because it is large enough to insist upon that. And wifi was not available where we were staying. So I recommend downloading it before you leave home. Then the app is able to run following your GPS, even when you have NO cell service, which is most of the drive.
Fantastic and interesting guide
My wife and just completed the road to Hana trip today. I planned out our honeymoon myself as a surprise for my wife, and had extensively researched all the stops along the road to Hana. I struggled to narrow down the list, and many of the stops are unmarked, so they can be missed due to the many curves and one lane bridges. This app made the trip very easy, as it described each stop as you approached and would point out the parking areas or turns for each. The guide recommends five "must-stops", but still describes other spots and leaves it up to you to decide which spots to stop and explore. In addition to descriptions and directions, the narrator shares some interesting facts, history, and stories tied to the various stops. There is commentary for the drive back from Hana as well, but no commentary for the full loop once you pass the Haleakala National Park (with Pipiwai Trail). We enjoyed the commentary so much, we changed our plan to do the full loop and returned the way we came so we could listen to the rest of the tour commentary on the return trip. GPS tracking was accurate and we had no issues. Simplify your day trip to Hana and back by using this app as your personal tour guide. Worth every penny!
One of the Best App for Road to Hana Guide
Excellent resource. This app saved us a lot of money. Instead of paying a tour guide company to take us... (Around $400 for a family of 4). We drove on a rental car, took our time driving and every key stops was pointed out. The narrator did a great job keeping the entire family entertained with Hawaiian history and trivia. If you think you would enjoy seeing the small side locations like the coral or other historic churches, you really do need to make it a two day trip. The tour takes you to the key waterfalls and an arboretum, but if you spend any time at these locations you are limited as to what you can actually visit. We would also highly recommend you pack a lunch and plenty of water. The road side options are very limited and you may not find a selection you like. Just to stop at the 5 key locations recommended on the tour, it is a good 10-12 hour day. Buy the app, you'll be glad you did!
