Rough Rider 2
By Audio Damage, Inc.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
With over half a million downloads, the free Rough Rider compressor from Audio Damage is one of the most popular plugin effects on the planet. Now available for the first time on iOS, Rough Rider 2 brings the exact same plugin to your iPad, as a stand-alone application (with Inter-App Audio) and as an AUv3 for use with hosts that support it, like GarageBand, Cubasis, and Audiobus 3.
What's New in Version 2.0.309
Fixes user interface scaling issues in smaller devices and the iPad Pro 12.9", as well as UI issues in zMors Modular and some other AUv3 hosts.
A favorite of mine.
This thing is great for compressing all sorts of audio types. Drums, bass, fatter synths, even some vocals. It’s got a good warm feel. See the reduction knob move in real-time was a nice touch. Having a Dry/wet mix knob makes this an excellent parallel compressor on an auxiliary bus. Hands down, I will be buying more audio damage plugins in the near future! Thanks for supporting AUv3!
I can’t believe this is free. I put it on every bus in AUM.
You could charge $1 at least and you would have had half a million in app sales (I’m sure of it). That being said, thank you Audio Damage! You make great products and I expected no less from this compressor.
Wow! An old free favorite is now a free iOS AUv3 Thanks!
I have an obscene number of AU/VST/MAS plug-ins that I’ve been using on the macOS platform since the mid 90s.
There aren’t too many free plug-ins that get much every day use in my desktop studio. I downloaded RoughRider maybe 10 years ago and use it quite a bit in Digital Performer. I like the controls and interface. It’s very easy to get the right amount and type of compression/limiting.
If you’re new to compression, having just the basic controls such as ratio, attack, release, make up gain, and in the case here, a mix control for parallel compression is really all you need.
If you know how to use compression, you’ll quickly see the logic in the order of the controls from left to right.
I don’t use presets much but I found the New York preset really good to use on some sub mixes, (not sure if it’s included here in this iOS version).
Thanks Audio Damage for making a RoughRider AUv3 for iOS. Once I saw it I quickly downloaded it and applied it to a session In Cubasis. With the iPad Pro being quite powerful, I can do a good amount of production on it.
I give RoughRider 5 stars due to its logical layout, (which many compressors seem to have trouble getting right - maybe because some of the early hardware compressors are laid out awkwardly if you started with software compressors), because it’s free and because it’s effective for a free compressor. It’s not as colored as some modeled compressors but for a free compressor that’s probably the right way to go.
