A Fresh And Innovative TBS
Rune Raiders is definitely one of the best, if not the best, turn-based strategy games in the App Store. Unlike other strategy games, it takes only a few minutes to learn the game basics. it's simple to learn but hard to master. There are several types of heroes you can choose from, each with unique abilities and attack pattern, then you have to position and move them strategically to encounter different enemy unit types with special abilities and deadly attacks.
There are IAPs, but so far, none have been required to keep playing. you pick up gold for each enemey you kill and you need it to buy and upgrade heroes, but if you're short on gold, you can plunder old levels for more gold and go back stronger to new missions. however, i just wish it had more than 20 levels.
Ads after buying? Not okay.
This is a cute, fun game. However, I purchased it back when it wasn't free. I should not be subject to the advertisements applied to 'free users.' It's a slap in the face to your customers to have the ad pop up on just the right way so that I click it accidentally when trying to select the next level. I am now in the process of selecting my next GAME.

Update to my previous review:
I contacted the game developers about my crashing issue. Apparently I'm in the minority, and a reboot fixed it for a while (though I experienced the crash again several days later - this can probably be fixed with yet another device reboot).
All that to say: the dev team got right back to me, and I sincerely appreciate that.
I played this game a ton the first several days I had it, but have eased off now. I still feel like I got my 99 cents worth.

Previous review:
The game has some cool elements, pretty well described by other reviewers. I like to take different characters into a level and try new strategies to mix the game up a bit.
Or, rather, I *did* like it, when the app would let me play. I reached Level 10, and now the app crashes when I try to load it. Yeah, I could start a new save and play that way, but I want to finish the campaign.
EDIT: Nope. I can't even play the other saves. The app is totally unusable now.
So much fun!
I'm a fan of old-fashioned RPGs from the days that computers took up nearly an entire room; I'm also a fan of strategy games that require the player to think rather just madly mash buttons like Pavlov's deranged pet monkey. This game has the best of both worlds! The controls are intuitive and easy to learn, the gameplay is logical, and the missions (game levels) are SO MUCH FUN. I only meant to try to the game for ten or fifteen minutes, and I've been playing for an hour. Have to stop writing now so I can go play the game some more! TRY THIS GAME - you won't regret it!
