Solid lock, one temporary issue with app

I’m approaching 2 years using the lock/app with Apple TV and HomeKit without any major issue. The only time I had a short-lived issue was during the last firmware update. I later realized that the problem with updating was caused by low battery level. Around the the time I updated the firmware the lock’s battery life was finally low after approximately 1 year of smooth operation. The lock definitely has a ‘funny’ way of letting you know the battery life is low. The firmware update was flawless after I changed batteries. I typically wait to read reviews before allowing significant updates, particularly if I’m not experiencing any issues (ain’t broke, don’t fix approach). So I never created a Schlage account during the brief time it was forced for operation. I knew the pushback from customers would be great enough to swiftly reverse that idea. I also waited to do the last firmware update until Dec 2017. I use HomeKit most of the time for remote lock/unlock, but app has always worked fine too. I believe the grossly negative reviews can be attributed to user error, WiFi issues and source of hub (if used). It’s really been a plug and play experience for me.

Avoid this Disaster of a Lock

I bought this lock early July 2016. It is now Jan 2017. In this time the lock has worked properly for a total of two weeks. I just spent 2 hours trying to get the lock to update to Latest firmware. It will not take the update. Rest lock to factory, removed from home kit, deleted app and started from scratch five times for the update does not succeed. Twice the firmware load bar made it all the way to the end after 15 minutes and then failed. This is a product like the high school science project of two geeks with little talent. Maybe they will get it right one day but you are doomed when apple updates HomeKit cause they only consider changes when failure calls come in. There is no proactivity. Avoid Avoid Avoid !!!

UPDATE: It is now February 21, 2018. Another forced firmware update which I had been avoiding because what always happens? Lock becomes unusable. I was forced to update because the battery was dieing. An now this app can’t find lock. Well it can to set up HomeKit but not to control the lock. Started small and worked up to delete lock and reset lock. Now the lock can’t be programmed even manually so I have no way in if the door is locked from inside. No way to lock door from outside.

I have the latest iOS (11.2.6) and app version and firmware (4.27).

This company is pathetic. Avoid at all cost. Third time since I bought the lock that it has become useless. Third time holding on phone for hours.

Works great with some things to consider

When I first set up the Sense lock, I used a iPad 4th gen that I would keep at home. Using HomeKit, it would work most of the time, but not always. Sometimes I would get alerts when locking the door a few minutes later, even on WiFi. Other times when refreshing to make sure the lock was locked over cellular it would take many minutes to finally see it updated as locked.

I got a Apple TV 4th gen to take over as the HomeKit hub, as the iPad had to always have Bluetooth enabled and power on, which sometimes became a problem when someone needed the iPad.

Let me say that using the Apple TV 4th gen made a huge difference. Much quicker, much more stable, and with a recent firmware update on the lock it seems to have been perfect timing. Everything works great now.

On a side note, I noticed that the lock starting acting strangely and opening itself... hacker? Don’t think so, the lock shower a battery at 34 percent and would beep 5 times with a yellow symbol on the lock when opening and closing. Seems to be a function to make sure you don’t get locked out by keeping the lock open.

Swapping new batteries fixed this as well.

Many things to be aware and consider, once done it works great.
