ScotsPipes - Play the Scottish Highland Bagpipes

By Michael Eskin

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Description

ScotsPipes is an easy to play, authentic sounding set of Scottish Highland Bagpipes for the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

Touching each of the holes makes a different tone of the standard bagpipes scale.

Once you touch a hole, the chanter plays continuously just like a real Scottish Highland chanter.

Touch the drones image to switch the drones on and off.

To stop the chanter playing, start and stop the drones.

Touch the 'i' icon at the bottom center to bring up the settings page. Here you can adjust the balance between the drones and chanter as well as turn the reverb on/off. (Reverb feature requires iOS 5.0 or later)

Please see the note below about the use of reverb in headphones on iOS6.

On the settings page, touch the ePipes logo to visit their website, or touch the TradLessons logo to learn more about my other music apps.

Please visit the app website for a demonstration video!

The drone and chanter sounds are provided by ePipes in Glasgow, Scotland, and are high quality per-note studio recordings of a world-class set of Great Highland Bagpipes.

Have an iPad and want a full realistic Highland Bagpipes app? Please check out my "Bagpipes" app for the iPad, which is played with the same fingerings as the real chanter.

Note about the use of headphones on iOS 6 devices:

Unfortunately, because of a bug Apple introduced in iOS 6 to the reverb system in iOS, the reverb is broken in headphones and results in the sound being panned far to the right.

Apple has been made aware of the issue and hopefully will fix the issue in a future iOS 6 update.

For now, please turn the reverb off when using headphones on iOS 6 devices to center the sound.

Fun stuff, great sound

I'm not a piper, but I like this app. It's easy to play, sounds good (unless you hate bagpipes), and is pretty intuitive. It automatically holds whatever note you touch, so articulating consecutive notes must be done by briefly touching another note and quickly returning to the first.
There is a stop button on the screen: touching the bagpipe image in the middle starts and stops the sound. (It would be a nice feature to be able to just stop the chanter sound without stopping the drone too, though.)
You don't have to cover several holes as you would on a real instrument: so you can play this with just one or two fingers. (Or thumbs.)
I can't vouch for its fingering authenticity, but if you have a real bagpipe, you likely don't need an app for that.
(Kilt sold separately.)

Easy Bagpipes

I have nearly all of the developer's bagpipe apps, and they are all quite good (many are realistic instruments). This one is a little too simple, since grace notes and slides are nearly impossible. But it is also impossible to actually finger like a real bagpipe (since nearly all fingers should be down on the holes for many notes to sound - this would not work on iPhone or even iPad). So, not very realistic but rather fun to play. It would be more valuable if it could play Scottish Smallpipe sounds too or transpose pitch, but it is a pretty cheap app. Placing the names of the notes next to the holes would be a simple addition that would make the app easier and more fun to play with.

Add some things please!

I love it! It would be more realistic if when you hit on of the holes the sound had a break. Like in Scotland the brave.. The first note is repeated.. That can't be played because of the constant stream of sound. Please fix!
