Face detection to the rescue! From the creators of Pano for iPhone comes Self Image, a new way to keep yourself in the picture. No more fumbling for the shutter, wondering if you're in the shot, or asking a stranger to take your photo.
Press a button to start up Self Image's super-advanced face detection algorithm, turn your phone around and smile. As soon as Self Image detects your face, it'll start a countdown and take your picture. That's it!
Indispensable even for iPhone 4 users.
Let's face it, the front camera on your iPhone 4, with its VGA quality, is no good for taking decent self-portraits where you may want also to capture the scene in the background or if you might want to print or display the shot later. Before finding this app, I would use the front camera to frame and take a "practice" photo, then flip the phone around to take a high-resolution shot, hoping that my face was still in the picture. This app takes that worry away and helps me get good portraits with myself in the picture. And of course, with my "old" 3Gs, which I now use as an iPod, it is an absolute must-have.
I hope the developers continue to support and improve this app. One suggestion: To view the shot you just took, you have to leave the app and go to your photo library. It would be nice if you could view your most recent photo or photos within the app (like you can, for example, in Hipstamatic).
Well worth the 99 cents.
Ready for an update
I bought this app after trying Pano. It seems that this app is ready for an update. After I take my photo I have to get out of the app and go to my photos to see the result. The tone of the inconsistent countdown would be better if it was someone counting without constantly starting over. On a positive note the photos look good. At this point in the development of this app I recommend users use the timer that works great. With the above changes my rating would be a 4+.
Why didn't Apple think of this?
This little app is great; it's simple and easy to use and works well. The interface is clean and professional looking.
My only gripe is that the countdown tone is too loud and the sound is obnoxious. I'd like a way to turn it down and change it to something better sounding.
